1958-61 Early DB4, seen better here http://pics.imcdb.org/558/010845.jpg -egg crate grille and tall air scoop mean pre-1961. https://www.sportsclassicslondon.com/Model-Guides/Aston-Martin-DB4 |

S1-3 grille and tall bonnet scoop, which are very difficult to split visually. Over-riders usually means S2 onwards, although not a solid rule. There was a difference in rear side window - curved and fixed on S1, opening and flat on S2/S3 - and bonnet was rear-hinged on S1, front-hinged on S2/S3. Splitting S2 and S3 needs a view of rear lights - they were enclosed under single "cathedral" unit on S1/S2, three separate lenses from S3 onwards. Entering as S2. |

Ah the rear window! I'm still searching for this "curved" early window, all the pics I find online look like a flat window to me and always with the round chrome pin hinge visible meaning you can open it... |

^ I've never seen a recognisable difference either. But the first 50 or thereabouts S1 (of 149 made) had no frames on this window, so no chrome surround, just black rubber. |

This DB4 is Ralph Thomas's own car DB4/116/R as seen in Doctor In Love 1960 with the badge bar. |
