POF 6xxG Maxis were pre-productions originally fitted with larger 1800 wheels - also /vehicle_1314832-Austin-Maxi-ADO14-1969.html and /vehicle_1314831-Austin-Maxi-ADO14-1969.html.

The plate means it's one of the pre-production batch which originally had the bigger wheels. But as seen here three years later, it has normal Maxi wheels, probably fitted very quickly after launch as Austin would need their press fleet to become "normal" specification.

ianmax69 wrote I can't imagine BLMC fitting landcrab 14' wheels to press launch Maxi's (the POFs) as for one think the 1800 uses a five stud wheel pattern and the Maxi a 4 stud pattern the same as a 1300.. They likely over gassed the hydrolastic bottles to increase the ride height.. espically over those dusty Portuguese unpaved roads.. Heres Harry Webster BLs Technical guru (and ex Triumph man) at the Oporto launch back in April 69 with the said wheels and to me it looks like the ride height is certainly up a bit.. It was possible to get 13 inch embelishers simillar to landcrab 1800 hubcaps at Maxi launch and these press cars had certainly been spruced up a bit for that! The Maxi Club do have a copy of BBCs "Wheelbase" from April 69 covering the Maxi launch and this year I must attempt to get it up on Youtube You see an interview with Gordon Wilkins interviewing Donald Stokes while driving one discussing the now infamous cable-gear-linkage..

The early Maxi, the only car I ever had which would creak when switched off.
