I guess because there was a complex range of Austin models it was easier to bring them in fully assembled. Local assembly of US cars was much simpler - usually only one or two body styles per make assembled locally and others to special order. There's enough established references to Aus importing UK chassis for local bodywork by several firms (including amongst others Holden) to suggest any NZ assembly would be flagged up somewhere if it had occurred. |

Worth remembering that the NZ and Australian assembly industries were completely unrelated - mainly due to different tariff regimes. |
