The Sunbeam 3 liter 'Supersports' was a rare vehicle. 50 were built in 1925, 250 in 1926- and then about another 10 over the next three years! The Chassis cost £900 and the car competed with the Bentley 3 liter of the time- coming in second to one of those at the Le Mans 24 hour race in 1925. The Bentley was doubtless more imposing, but the Sunbeam had the first production twin cam engine in the world- a very hansom engine it was, too. 75 x 110mm bore and stroke, just under 3 liters, it had a fixed cylinder head and would have been difficult to maintain and thus very expensive to run, as well as to buy. -- Last edit: 2010-03-08 17:37:20 |
