It's modified Manta Montage.
Original Manta Montage kit car was sold by Manta Cars in california.
In early 80's, Manta cars stopped business and Manta Montage kit car was succeeded by Warp Five,Inc.

That sentence on Wikipedia is strange: the way it is written looks like it was meant to say that it is a Manta, with a "not" added there by mistake.
Anyway, we should list it as "Made for Movie" then.

I'm pretty sure Wikipedia is just wrong, How do we know that some idiot didn't edited that wikipedia page like they always do? I also thought we were not supposed to always trust wikipedia, because they were often wrong? I think we need to do a little more research on the Coyote before immediately calling it ''Made for Movie''. Just look at the windshield, fenders, and the doors! it clearly started life as a Manta Montage! http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/30/mantamontage1.jpg/sr=1 in fact, when looking up Manta Montage, nearly all of it was related to Hardcastle and McCormick Link to "www.google.com"

I always liked the original Coyote much more than the Delorean based one of S2 and S3 !!!!

Well, actually, the Coyote was designed to look like a McLaren M6GT Link to "4.bp.blogspot.com" so we should list McLaren M6GT, right? since its supposed to be one, then it would be incorrect to list as ''Made for Movie Coyote'' with no mention of McLaren in the listing.

No, the Manta Mirage was meant to look like a McLaren M6 GT. The Coyote was meant to look like an exotic sports car of the future. Which is why it looks less like a McLaren than the car it started out as.

tom11

2012-04-01 20:58

But wikipedia says that ''The nose, windshield doors and lower body are faithful representations of the McLaren'' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardcastle_and_McCormick#Coyote_X so it was indeed supposed to be a McLaren!

If you don't believe them saying its supposed to look like a McLaren, then why do you believe them when they say its ''Made for Movie''? :??:

That's exactly what you are guilty of, only in reverse. I'm not too fussed if it is listed as a Manta Mirage. I'm quite happy to believe it was based on one. I'm not sure if cars which are modified should be listed on what it was originally but the later car is listed as a DeLorean and that has been modified even more extensively.

If you don't want to trust Wikipedia, don't trust it. Don't pick and choose what things on it can be 'facts'.

They were inspired by the McLaren; they didn't intend to build a replica of it. That's quite different.
Also, on the site of the company who made the car they just mention it as a "Coyote", without saying that an actual car was used as base, unlike for the later one which was based on a DeLorean.

Well most of these '70's & '80's Kit Cars were built on old VW chassis so could we list it as a VW Coyote X? Also, on the Manta Wikipedia page, under Media Appearences, it says a Manta Montage was the car in Hardcastle & McCormick.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manta_Mirage
And the Montage used a rear engined, VW based platform

It is custom built on a VW chassis, maybe, but it does not make that a VW model

I know. But it also says it was a Manta Montage used in the show.

Much of the info above is applicable, but seriously mixed-up. The reality is this: McLaren built a successful race car called the M6G. And like Carroll Shelby's Mustangs, McLaren decided to build a street version: The M6GT. For most people, the price was far out of reach. Luckily, VW-based kit cars were popular at the time and along came the look-alike Manta Montage kit. One of those kits eventually ended up being modified into the Coyote. So- what is more accurate to call this car? Well, it isn't an entirely studio-constructed vehicle like the Tumbler, so "built for TV Coyote" isn't accurate. It's also not a McLaren M6GT, obviously- it simply looks a lot like one. Now the Humongus truck in The Road Warrior is based on a Ford F100 chassis... but we don't call it a 'modified/customized F100"... so calling the Coyote a "customized VW Beetle" also falls short. For me, the most accurate way to describe it is as a "Modified Manta Montage VW-based kit car".

antp BE

So in the end it would be a modified Manta? That's what it was listed previously but was changed later...

jwrADPS is correct. Part of the confusion here is that the Lovette brothers made 2 *different* Manta kit cars: The Mirage (based on the McLaren M8) and the Montage (based on the McLaren M6GT and M12). The Hardcastle & McCormick Cody Coyote is based on a McClaren M6GT, but it looks a lot like the Manta Montage kit car, with the front end changed to look more like an original McLaren M6GT. Bear in mind that only 1 actual M6GT was ever built by McLaren (for Bruce McClaren). Two or three others were built by Trojan Motorsports for McClaren Motorsports, and several more (ten? twelve?) were built afterwards by Trojan for private parties. Most records indicate the Cody Coyote was built from a Manta Montage, but the front end is not the stock Montage. However, the rear of the car is without question a Manta Montage (which you can see at the beginning of the series pilot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8R0XymNjvM ).
