A Martin Scorsese film, with Paul Newman, Tom Cruise, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, John Turturro and Forest Whitaker. Interesting "second part" of The Hustler (1961) http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0054997/.

As it happens, I shouldn't have. It completely ruined the movie for me. Not that there was much to ruin to begin with. Touting this as a sequel to "The Hustler" is all wrong. Martin Scorsese, I learned too late, even went on reacord stating he didn't want to make a direct sequel to "The Hustler" with this movie and he certainly didn't, although, ironically, it comes off close to one if one imagines Paul Newman is reprising George C. Scott's character whom this incarnation of Fast Eddie resembles far more than it does the original Eddie (whom it resembles none at all). All the same, the movie can't hide it's a strictly commercial enterprise directed by a hired gun (whereas "The Hustler" was a deeply personal investment by its co-writer and director with no commercial considerations in mind), hurt further by its tired, old, clichéd tale of an aged ex-pro and a young hotshot (really just the fastest gun in the West tale transplated into pool halls, but without the suspense and the payoff), not helped in any manner whatever by a hopelessly irritating Tom Cruise. His scenes with Newman are textbook displays of the difference between an actor and a star.

Anyway, upgraded to HD.
