Why does it seem as if Allis Chalmers sponsored the tractors for this one? Can anyone who has seen the credits confirm?

Were the tractors all current models when the film was made?

I just rewatched the credits, no word about Allis-Chalmers...
I guess this is the movie with the most AC!

Gag, they were about as current as you could get as far as I could establish (not being an expert on AC). They sold out to K-H-Deutz AG in 1985, i.e. before the movie was released (and went over to AGCO in 1990, FWIW). The tractors here all seem to be 1980>, therefore the last "real" ACs made.

Garco, please see my comment to Gag above - could that have anything to do with it?

I have read it, but I don't understand what you mean

OK, sorry - not very clear:
*Could* it be that:
- AC was indeed involved in the supply of vehicles for the film in a last-ditch marketing attempt, but that the take-over caught up with them and the credits scrapped?
- Deutz was keen to sustain the market position of AC (did KHD get any credits maybe?)

I know I am wildly speculating due to an hyperactive imagination, but there has to be a reason behind all the tractors in a movie being of one brand (in its death-throes)... ?

No, Deutz (KHD) was also not named in the credits.
But you're theory could be right though?

I still find it hilarious that the dealership sign has IH on it.

This film was inspired by the crimes of the real-life Pennsylvania rural criminal gang, the Johnston Gang who had operated throughout the rural areas in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware during the 1960s and 1970s.

The Johnston Gang had made their illicit money from thefts of tractors, jewellery, money, cars and other valuable items that would sell on the black market.

The Gang was also involved in witness intimidation and later murder.

In 1976, a local mechanic Gary G. Hauck had unknowingly purchased a tractor that was stolen by the Gang and was called to testify, but before being due to give evidence, Hauck got a phone call from an unknown caller, stated they put sticks of dynamite in Hauck's truck and when Hauck went to inspect his vehicle, he found five sticks of dynamite taped together under the driver's seat.

This resulted in Hauck dropping out of the case against the Johnston Gang.

The characters in the film were based on the real members of the Johnston Gang and their associates:

Brad Whitewood Sr. (portrayed by Christopher Walker) - Based on Bruce Johnston Sr., the leader of the Johnston Gang, was involved in several thefts and burglaries with the gang, convicted of stealing tractors in 1979 and sentenced to nine years imprisonment, later convicted of murder and attempted murder in 1981 and sentenced to life imprisonment, died of liver disease at the State Correctional Institution Graterford in Graterford, Pennsylvania on the 8th August 2002.

Brad Whitewood Jr. (portrayed by Sean Penn) - Based on Bruce Johnston Jr., Burce Johnston's son and member of the Johnston Gang, was involved in several thefts, convicted of petrol theft from vehicles in 1977 and served a year in prison, later shot along with along with his girlfriend, Robin Miller by Bruce Sr's brothers and members of Johnston Gang, Norman and David Johnston at the home of Miller's mother in Chesterfield, Pennsylvania on the night on the 30th August 1978.

Despite being hit multiple times, Bruce Jr had survived his injures and testified against his father and uncles and placed in witness protection, currently serving a sentence for drug possession.
