The other two must have made it; all four were from the same high school but only the two listed as dead in the paper were memorialized in their 1964 Edgewood High yearbook.
ETA: John Butler graduated in 1965 and Christine Dahlem had a long recovery, but is apparently still alive. One paper referred to the vehicle only as a "1963 station wagon".

The newspaper puts the filming date as November 12, 1963:

Examining it closer, now that the movie's on YT, the burning car has a much taller trunk lid and the belt line slopes downward. There's no "tulip panel" between the trunk and the top opening, and the top frame is a mockup with no hinges. I'm pretty sure the burning car was a junker '48 Sedanette fastback with the roof sawed off and a fake top frame added.

Which is something of a relief.

Appears to be the car in which actor Evgeniy Urbanskiy was killed during a stunt that went wrong:

Buick, '46-'48. 2022-11-12 22:27
Check out the nighttime in-car scenes with this Valiant - the movie's set in L.A. but all the cars in the back-projected shots are French; must have been footage from some other movie. 2022-11-12 22:20
Very familiar license number on this car...

This scene was also re-used in the 1959 movie Speed Crazy. 2022-11-07 00:12
Looks like it has a curved windshield, so '54-'55? 2022-07-20 00:56
'58; it has shorter taillight lenses that don't reach the top of the fins. 2022-07-20 00:52
Mercedes 190? Looks to be in Yellow Cab markings; never knew Yellow used them as taxis. 2022-07-20 00:26
This should cinch it as a '39 Plymouth. Images via blu-ray.com and allpar.com:

Grille and rear fenders ID it as a '56 DeSoto Diplomat, although there's a stray "L" on the hood - the Diplomat was a dressed-up Plymouth so there's probably the usual parts-swapping going on. 2022-06-06 05:09
Toy car on the left is an Avon cologne bottle in the shape of a '37 Cord phaeton; on the right is a tin litho Model T Ford. 2022-06-06 04:16

Two of the Tatras used in the film are coming up for auction in Lancaster, CA; both are in pretty sad condition from neglect:

From the "making of" documentary, getting a little work done (who needs jackstands? :wow:):

Found the "making of" doc on YouTube; take 1 was definitely a '46 Ford:
[Image: inharmswaytake1.jpg] [Image: inharmswaytake12.jpg]
Probably not used because the car started falling back on its wheels instead of going end-over-end like the Mercury.

CougarTim a écrit 9-11 & 18-19: Probably the same plane. Both airline names appear to be fake and I cannot find anything on tail number OB-AOD.

Looks like a modified Western Airlines paint scheme on that Convair.

Body looks like '30-'31 Model A Ford; taillights are inverted '58 Chevy front parking lights. Should be listed as "modified" or street rod"? 2022-03-02 02:12

1962 Buick Electra 225; shows up several times in the first five minutes of the film, driving around in the background - note how the amount of snow on the trunk lid changes from shot to shot...

It's had some custom work done; looks like a '58 Impala fake roof vent added to the hardtop. 2022-03-01 05:08
Kind of an oddball as it's a '64 with '63 wheelcovers (and therefore 14" wheels instead of the 15" wheels it should have :??:) 2022-03-01 04:55

Anne Helm is pointing out a detail we hadn't noticed:

This decal on the windshield appears to be a "cheat sheet" showing English traffic signs. Anyone know more?
2022-02-06 05:47
Odd, the front end damage differs in the fifth and sixth images - looks like a fake damaged fender was laid over the real one in the fifth. 2022-02-06 04:27
Liberace had the last word about this film - on the Academy Awards broadcast in 1982, he played the theme to Sincerely Yours and said, "Well, I've done my part for motion pictures - I've stopped making them!" 2022-01-27 06:30
It might be Russian underneath, but many Cuban trucks I've seen in photos or on TV have much older bodies on newer chassis. This one's cab looks strongly like a cut-down late prewar American sedan - note how the drip rail extends to the rear without turning down - and my best guess due to the flat windshield and door shape would be 1938 or 1939 Lincoln Zephyr, although the rest of the front end is anything but Lincoln! 2021-12-01 10:05
'61 - it has the two ribs on the hood that were only used that year. 2021-12-01 09:31
Right you are - 1967 Comet Voyager wagon. 2021-12-01 09:20
Only took eleven years :/ , but here you go - three shots Ray took on location with the Caprice - note the license plate I mentioned, plus the broken or burnt-out high beam headlight on the driver's side which is visible on screen. I've looked for those other cars in the photos (Renault 5, Torino, Valiant, International stakebed, and red Chevy pickup), but they don't appear in the film; maybe crew vehicles?

One of the kids says it has a Cadillac engine, but that's clearly a Ford flathead V8. 2021-06-10 09:43

1940 Deluxe, not '39 - note the cowl-mounted wipers, sealed-beam headlights and single trim spear on the side of the hood. 2021-06-10 09:26
Roadmaster, from the four portholes and the parking lights incorporated in the headlight bezels. 2021-04-10 18:32

Yes. 2021-03-27 15:27
GM yes, but it's the earlier version - note how the driver's door B-pillar slants back at the top, flatter roof, and narrower taillights. 2021-03-27 15:26
Chevy - '55-'57. 2021-03-27 15:22
'66 Buick Special wagon - note the porthole strip over the front wheelwell ('67 didn't extend as far). 2021-03-27 15:20
