Speedbird209 ![]() | Just come across this site whilst going down a Google rabbit hole and thought I could add some information. My late father was an avid Crayford fan but it wasn't until 1981 that he could afford as " used" one which was Quicks' of Manchester demonstrator. It was actually a Carbodies 1.6 GL Coupe automatic in white. The reg plate was RNF xxW but I can't remember it all. No PAS and auto choke which was a nightmare so we converted it to a manual. It was a wonderful car in its day. It got handed on to my mum when we found a 2.0 GLS manual (903 FAB) in prairie yellow ( yuck) for sale in Croydon in 1986. That was a much better car to drive and was on the Crayford Stand at the NEC in 1987. Dad kept it until 1990 by which point the scuttle shake etc had taken its toll on the bodywork. I think it was either 1982 or 83 I saw a metallic brown 2.0 GLS for sale in the Sunday paper. We went over to Anfield to see it and it was Bruce Grobbelaar's. Sadly, in those days the players parked behind the Centenary Stand and nearly every body panel had been scratched / keyed. Despite my excitement ( LFC fan and it had electric windows) it was a firm no from dad ![]() The only Crayfords or Carbodies Cortinas I remember from the TV are: Rentaghost, Only Fools & Horses (MK 2 "shed") and the pink (LHD) one in the Barbie video by Aqua circa 1997 ( Crayford MK 4) |

Bux_48 ![]() | Indeed, [100GL] refers to 100-series motor family, so these ones: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_100_series_engine Here are lots of Fiat (and not only) engine codes: https://www.repubblica.it/misc/autosuper/2.html So, technically it isn't a chassis code and should be right only for 903cc 127s (anyway all first series ones and most of others). |
2021-05-07 19:15 | ||
130rapid ![]() | Looks like 100GL code indicates 903 cc engine. | 2021-05-07 17:19

dsl ![]() | Glass's lists UK S1 2-door as 127A from Oct 71 (with 3 door as 127AF from July 72, then 127A3 from Jan 74). 127 Special from Jan 75 has same 127A/127A3 codes. S2 facelift (July 77) has confused codings - seems to be 127A1 across versions, then adding 127A2 for 127 Sport (Oct 78, revamped as 127 GT in April 82). No other codes mentioned after 1980. | 2021-05-07 16:27
Bux_48 ![]() | Probably already discussed, but.. I see that, whereas first series 127s all have [100GL] as chassis code, some second generation have [100GL], others have [127] or [127A] and most have no code, and same happens for the third (excluding Brazilian builds). How should we list 1978-83 ones? I think that [127] is the general project code for all 127s (not very unexpected ), whereas restyled ones (II and Italian-built III) have 127A in the VINs (at least 1981+ ones) as present in several listings here (like 1986+ Pandas have 141A), so maybe these should all be reunited under [127A]? And the same is to apply for Seats? (IMO yes) -- Last edit: 2021-05-07 15:45:57 |

Sandie ![]() | Thanks, now thinking our band of truthseekers need to see if the windscreen/side windows are identifiable from a bus or truck to see if we can work out what's under the made for movie modifications. A point at which I have to admit to being well out of my depth (I could blag my way to ID a genuine ex-Met vehicle ). |

AnimatronixX ![]() | @Sandie: Unfortunately no really good idea, but I notice the very rough coachwork! A 1960s kitchen furniture/ prisoner van hybrid - combination you don't see every day. The clumsy A-pillar: ![]() The aluminium molding below the rubber-framed side windows ending just somewhere - completely unrelated to the shape of the windows: ![]() The "geometry for beginners" front end with its glued-chipboard charm: ![]() The list goes on! I think *if* there were professional commercial coachbuilders involved, they better keep quiet about it. Looks pretty "made for movie" to me, probably built for prisoners by prisoners, maybe somewhat inspired by the Bedford Locomotors prisoner vans. |

Sandie ![]() | @AnimatronixX might have some ideas here as it is not a million miles from his recent security van research? The other pages are better pictures for checking. I've done some searches but can't find anything, even resorted to looking at old TV news footage of prisoners arriving at court without joy so far! -- Last edit: 2021-01-17 22:40:38 |
