midnight_trucker ![]() | There was three Kenworth Trucks used to film Smokey and the Bandit and I don't care for those who want to argue up and down that there was only two trucks used to film Smokey and the Bandit when the evidence clearly doesn't point to that The first truck that was primary used in the film was a 1974 Kenworth W-925 that had a 1693 400HP Cat Engine with a 13 Speed Transmission This truck hasn't surfaced since 1979, So, It is more than likely long gone today ![]() ![]() The second truck was also a 1974 Kenworth W-925 that had an NTC-400HP Cummins Engine with a 13 Speed Transmission This truck also hasn't surfaced since 1979, So, It is more than likely long gone today This truck appears in the film when pulling up to pulling up to and outside of the Coors Beer Warehouse in Texarkana (I know it's Georgia in the film i'm just giving other's a brief idea of where to look for the truck in the film), At Snowman's house, When Bandit & Snowman cross back the Georgia state line including when Snowman gets pulled over by the cop on the motorcycle, after Snowman runs through the road block of the cop cars near the end of the film with the exception of the wide corner before Snowman crashes through the red wooden fence and drives across the race track and than not the last time this truck appears in the film is not to long after the Bandit smashes through the mailboxes on the side of the road The last truck used in the film was a 1973 Kenworth W-925 that Joe Klecko had sold the film production while the two 1974 Kenworth W-925's used in the film had came from JT Jenkins which is the same dealer that had supplied Hollywood with some of the trucks for B.J. and the Bear The 1973 Kenworth W-925 had a VT-903 350HP Cummins Engine with a 13 Speed Transmission This truck appears in the film while driving in the rain followed by the night time scene the Snowman was known to be driving the truck, At the opening race track scene, When Snowman honks the horn at the boys that pull over to change the flat tire on Carrie's car, In the majority of the scene the Bandit smashes through the mailboxes on the side of the road, At old miss lake, when the Snowman passes the lead Blue truck in the rocking chair, When Bandit says to Snowman "Hello there Snowman I am right beside you and it looks like we have a clear shot to the Alabama state line" and most importantly this truck appears at the biker bar that the Snowman gets beat up gets beat up at or shortly before when the old lady warns the Bandit over the CB Radio that he better not go a certain way because there's been a little fender bender Another few times this truck appears in the film is that it is seen with a big grill guard in front of the grill when it is running through the road block of cop cars near the end of the film, when the truck takes wide corner after Snowman runs through the road block of the cop cars near the end of the film and also when Snowman crashes through the red wooden fence and drives across the race track into the pits to the end of the film During filming this 1973 truck was mainly used for interior shots and was rigged with Camera's and put onto a lowbed at times for filming ![]() ![]() Overdrive Magazine was also on the set of Smokey and the Bandit and had featured the film in their May of 1977 copy and it was in there that they mention that there was three trucks used to film Smokey and the Bandit They were actually advertising their Overdrive Magazine Cover of White Line Fever in the beginning race track scene of Smokey and the Bandit ![]() ![]() So, The truck should be listed as a 1974 Kenworth W-925 on this site -- Last edit: 2023-06-13 09:05:07 |

ThatVIntageCarGuy ![]() | Actually the white highway patrol cars could be 1976 as indicated by the fillers in the bumper being grey and not matching the rest of the paintjob applied to the body, a 1976 only feature if I recall. Don't know about the Arkansas police cars though. | 2023-05-31 13:36
sixtiesswing ![]() | Thanks, truckface! Very interesting, and makes complete sense. A Cadillac 75 would not be a common sight, but the fact it is tailing the Sheriff's car here suggests that once the scene is done, Mr. Gleason could get in the car as if a trailer, or ride off somewhere. I knew he had a Lincoln Lehmann-Peterson circa 1968, but didn't know about this Cadillac. He lived like Hollywood royalty, and he deserved it! A difficult early life and a brilliant actor. A golden era for actors and cars, even if it was the malaise era for the latter!!!! |

F15007 ![]() | I think that he was just stating the year range of this type of model Kenworth was made although the film had came out in 1977 But, Truth be told from the Overdrive Magazine article that I had posted up above the truck in the film was a 1974 if we want to be exact and actually Kenworth made some glider kits titled as 1983's of the A model Kenworth |

F15007 ![]() | The May of 1977 Overdrive Magazine was mostly behind the scene's of making this film including the beginning race track scene and states that atleast one of the trucks used during the film was a 1974 Kenworth W-900 although there were three different trucks used to film Smokey and the Bandit ![]() |

Skid ![]() | The hood scoop marks this as a former DeKalb County, Georgia police unit. The hood scoop (a Cal Custom piece) was installed as a modification by the department on their cruisers, presumably to help with performance. | 2023-03-03 15:29
Skid ![]() | Pierrro: Apparently true. Engine sounds recorded from the 1955 Chevrolet that Harrison Ford drove in "American Graffiti" were supposedly dubbed in, to make the Trans Am sound "tougher." | 2023-02-28 04:55
pierrro ![]() | I have read on another website that the sound of the engine was dubbed. By a 1955 Chevrolet. And yet nobody talks about it here. So, true or false ? |

geop ![]() | the black smoke was normal for a truck that old, what is happening is a truck drag race. no smoke control on old engines like that one. the drivers used to put a dime [ten cent piece ] in the return lines . | 2022-10-16 01:21
sixtiesswing ![]() | Another aspect that identifies this as a '74 is that it does not have the verticle corner lights running from the top of the front fenders to the bumper. Instead, it has the horizontal rectangle turn signals in that location right above the bumper. The rectangular turn signals were moved back between the corner lights on the fenders and the front wheel arches. | 2022-10-02 06:17
pierrro ![]() | Now that Burt Reynolds and Jerry Reed are dead, and in honor of them, shouldn't we give that truck a 5th star? After all, it was more The Bandit's truck than Snowman's. | 2022-09-02 18:25

Nick Rynearson ![]() | No brown squad cars were a thing, not really any more since brown isn't a popular color anymore, but some counties did use brown police cars, just like white police cars |

JE77 ![]() | They was an white AMC Matador sedan (1974-1977), in the background, right after the Lemans' roof came off. It was park on the side of the road, near the trees. I known it's to far off, but I just to point it out, and maybe somebody posted an pic of it? maybe an close-up of it? -- Last edit: 2021-06-02 09:27:58 |

-- Last edit: 2021-02-02 22:41:54 |

Baube ![]() | here too it is ( probably we have France's version ) . i think its more a translation error in wiki they say the Trans Am was named this way because of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-Am_Series maybe the translation comes from there .. ![]() |

pierrro ![]() | Unrelated to the previous question : in the French version of the movie, they don't call this car a Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am, but a "Trans-America", since Pontiac was a completely unknown brand in France. And probably in the rest of Europe. To all the Europeans present here, had it been re-baptized in your country too? | 2021-02-01 22:50
mrwebber35 ![]() | Only the 1976/77 had the clear front signal lights with orange bulbs. Very rare to find un-cracked. I have a 1976 B200 Tradesman and it still runs smooth and doesn't burn oil. Had to change the valve seals, clean up the valves/cylinders and intake gasket but she is nearly 100% now with 96,000 original miles. Mainly highway miles on it. Another indicator the Smokey and Bandit van was prior to 1976 is the DODGE lettering is missing on the hood. I believe this shows it is probably a 1974/75 B100 shorty as only the 1974/75 B200/300 extended MAXIVAN's had the lettering and all Tradesman's had the lettering after 1975. The 1975's were pretty much identical to the 1974's as far as I know. I've seen plenty of 1977 advertised with clear signal lenses and plenty with the orange/yellow colour. I suspect the earlier 1977 manufactured before June may be the only ones with clear and after June with the orange. If anyone can prove otherwise I'm always open to the facts. -- Last edit: 2021-01-19 11:15:44 |

| VP714ever | Got a question about Trans Ams used in the film. So based on those interviews with people who were working on the film or just watched the filming, there were eight '77 special edition Trans Ams which were donated to the production, although Needham kept giving the different number over the years, like three or five, and Reynolds said how they had and destroyed twelve Trans Ams (!) on first film alone. What i'm curious about is, if anybody knows how were some of the Trans Ams damaged or destroyed during filming? We already know about one which was used for bridge jump and which was completely destroyed after landing, one which crashed through mailboxes, and the last surviving "hero" car which was used for cameras and actors close ups and stills, but was crushed with all the others after filming. | 2020-12-21 21:35 | ||

CaptainDew ![]() | This van is actually a 76 cause my dad had one from 1991-1999 the same color and size it a Dodge B200 Tradesman by the front and it was driving by young John Bo Duke Schneider on the film he was wearing the yellow Coors t-shirt and the only line he had was Sh** you do what you want Im staying right here. | 2020-07-16 16:58
CaptainDew ![]() | As you know but the engine in it is not a 400 c.i cause the hood shaker does not say T/A 6.6 it only say 6.6 LITRE and that is a factory Oldsmobile 403 c.i with 185 horse power the 400 c.i is a Pontiac 400 with 207 horse power which were never use in the film. | 2020-07-16 16:37
