narcofrecuencia MXYou do need to steer if you need to be towed. There are no visible levers, gauges or pedals. Back in 1975 standard batteries would have needed much bigger space for storage unlike nowadays. 2023-07-07 02:32

dsl SXNothing listed for Subaru (as Fuji Heavy Industries) in Israel in World Cars 1972 (no overseas sites at all) and 1975 & 1978 (both say only one overseas site - Portugal - but no clue what was made).

These World Cars lists are not bullet-proof but mostly solid; a made-for tag would be useful in case new info is found, so updates can be made.

s13a LTNo mention of the local assembly according to the Israeli Wiki. Although it's worth mentioning that Subaru (along with Hino) was the most common Japanese brand in Israel at that time, mainly because other Japanese manufacturers (Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, Honda etc) avoided the Israeli market in the 1970s and 1980s because of the Arab boycott, which could have significantly affected their sales in the Arabian Peninsula. 2023-07-01 13:29

dsl SXI'd guess it is powered - otherwise you don't need the steering wheel, seat (which looks like a double) and other controls. No idea if electric or engined, but there's 2 of them in the wider shot. JBT seem to make similar electric things today (from here) but no doubt lots more possibilities. 2023-06-30 20:07
Baube QCmy idea was spread all across the structure but i don't really see the advantage of using this if you need another vehicle to tow it.. 2023-06-30 19:09
narcofrecuencia MXI don't see where they'd put the battery in that floor while keeping the structure strong enough to hold the stairway weight capacity. It does have a protrusion in the middle but it doesn't seem detachable/accessible and is probably there just to support the stairs when lowered.

Baube QCor electric maybe ? 2023-06-30 18:56
narcofrecuencia MXYes it looks to be the same. With such thinness of the frame I don't believe it's motorized/powered at all, only steerable.

dsl SXEarly bumper, looks like designer plate but not readable. First 164s in UK Jan 69, Oct 69 fogs fitted in UK instead of horn grilles. Might have Oct 71+ recessed door handles. 2023-06-30 17:47

dsl SXThe only solid claim I've seen for Israel Ford builds is Escort from 1968 to about 1981 (Mk1-3) - nothing for Cortinas (or Transits, which seem to have been popular there). I guess the link was always with Ford UK rather than Germany - one unusual consequence was LHD Cortina Mk5s for Israel which I don't think happened anywhere else from European Mk4/5 production (even though these may well have been rebadged TC2/3s from Genk rather than Dagenham builds) apart from Portugal which assembled both Mk4/5. Some bits of Europe got LHD Mk3s, but I don't think there were many places or high numbers.

(cheap Altaya partwork from a few years ago)

Also noted that captured Mk3 has no grille badge so poverty base spec - no luxuries for the Israeli police!

electra225 ITI remember a Palestinian man living in Jericho driving one exactly like this one in 1991. 2023-06-30 13:23
electra225 ITI am almost sure such Fords were assembled in Israel. I clearly remember when I lived in the Middle East that Ford had been "punished" by the Arab league in the way that for a quite long way (I would say by the late 60s to the mid 80s but I am not sure... but I remember many Taunus P2, P3 and P5 in Syria and Jordan, but not a single Escort or Knudsen-Taunus) Ford imports in the Arab countries were banned.

dsl SXMk3 Sept 71+, so probably Austin although Morris is possible; there were no Mk3 Morris saloons in UK because the Marina had arrived, but the Traveller continued on its lonesome for a few months until April 72 (UK) and April 73 (some export markets) to fill gap before Marina Estate arrived. Austin ended June 74. 2023-06-30 11:58
