lightninboy USI recall the guy in the movie said something like "I've hit every American car built between 1940 and 1960 except a '50 Studie." And then there's a '50 Studie in the derby. And he takes the ambulance and hits it. 2013-03-18 17:36
Commander 57 USUnfortunately, the new photos still don't show the center of the trunk lid where the Commander V-8 emblem would be.

If the film references this as a 1950 model, they simply made an error. Clear 1951 styling right down to the bumper guards (or should I say guard).

AFAIK the film is not based on a book or any other previous source, so could have chosen any car it liked to be the final car to complete Veldini's smash-em-up record. What makes this definitely a 51? Were there any model year shenanigans to explain the film reference to a 50 such as a spring launch of the 51?
2013-03-18 14:19
Commander 57 USNo. Have covered this before.
The '51 Commander Regal also had rubber guards.

The 1951 Studebakers that had stainless steel gravel guards were the Commander State and Land Cruiser models and all Champion convertibles. (Commander convertibles were all in the State trim line.)

All other models had rubber guards except for the Champion Custom which had no guards at all.

We can however say the subject car carries Regal trim since it appears to have ss rocker trim.
But Champion Regal vs Commander Regal can only come from a trunklid view, dashboard view or a shot of the engine to see if it is a 6 or V-8.
(The Commander and Champion names were on the front to the right of the spinner as you face the car but you would need an extreme close-up shot to read them.)

Ddey65 USThis looks like it was made between 1964 and 1966, due to the position of the headlights, and lack of side-markers.

The cowl insignia on the door might also be a key to identifying it.
