bbutc ![]() | The problem is - you can't just take a coupe and cut the roof off and produce a convertible because you loose all the strengthening to the chassis that the roof structure provides. It would have cost Toyota millions in development costs to re-design the chassis and tooling to mass-produce a convertible version, and with such ridiculously low production numbers involved this would have been unjustifiable at the time, no matter how tempting. Plus, as others have stated, it doesn't look like it would have suited European or American markets due to the small cabin size - another re-design cost! | 2022-12-15 12:06
sixtiesswing ![]() | Incidentally, I always found the white top on the black Polara (I used to think dark blue) was unusual, but noticed a number of other large American cars that are in this same scheme around "Osato Chemicals Ltd" (The New Otani Hotel). I understand that these are "hire cars", and basically taxis that are reserved by phone. I do not know the difference from other "reserve by phone" taxi services other than the color combination and rather grand (by Japanese standards) size of these cars. The New Otani has a fullsize 1965 Pontiac that can be seen as Aki accelarates to the scoop up 007 and away from the Toyota Crown assassins. After the 2000GT swings past the building's entrance to meet up with the Crown goons, the edge of the parking lot has couple of 1963 Dodge Polara sedans, and a 1964 Pontiac (Catalina, Parisienne, or Laurentian) that can be seen. Someone else may be able to extend the knowledge of this curiosity, but my belief is that this is a specific taxi company or represents a specific method in 1960s Tokyo. The contributor 'Qball' from Japan comments on the 1965 Pontiac Catalina entry that it is a "livery car" as indicated by green plates. This Dodge also has green plates, and the same white roof / black body combination of that Catalina. -- Last edit: 2021-11-30 03:34:33 |

dsl ![]() | Might have been a pre-production/development car which Toyota would otherwise have scrapped - sometimes these get offered to film makers to destroy onscreen instead. | 2021-10-26 22:45
sixtiesswing ![]() | Well, consider how many new Chevrolets were destroyed in the Bond film "Live and Let Die". I think Goldfinger must have set the president when Mr. Solo is crushed at the scrapyard inside a "brand new" Lincoln Continental. Of course they switched out the new 1964 model depicted in all the driving scenes and used the similar-looking 1963 model with the engine removed. From what I have come across recently, director Guy Hamilton hated the typical big American car, and enjoyed destroying them, preferably in an embarassing way....hence all the absurd automotive destruction when he returned to direct "Diamonds are Forver" and "Live and Let Die". Although Ford has maintained a good relationship with the Bond series by supplying vehicles off and on since Goldfinger, "Live and Let Die" was not only the first but the LAST time that Chevrolet / General Motors supplied cars to a Bond film. But as someone on the LALD entry suggested, the cars used and totalled were most likely preproduction or press cars that would not be resold. Regarding the film discussion here of "You Only Live Twice", Toyota bent over backwards to get into this film and supply vehicles. I recall an article in "Classic and Sportscar" about the 2000GT models built specifically for use in the film, and Toyota was competing with General Motors who were anxious to get the soon-to-be-released 1967 Chevrolet Camaro into the starring car role. But Toyota met the filmmakers' needs by making the two custom convertible versions. Throwing in a 1966 Crown for a burial at sea was probably another enticement by Toyota to producers. |

sixtiesswing ![]() | It depends where this was filmed. I believe Toho Studios was utilized for filming, but of course Pinewood was home to the volcano and many other sets. This Parisienne could be a UK-market model used in this garage scene if it was filmed in England. Otherwise, there are various other Pontiacs that can be seen in the background (at least two in Osato Chemical's parking lot and one on a residential side street during the chase.) |

| amcarfrue | Yes, it fine that I stand as the owner 🙈 It is actually a long story with that car. 😳 Its been through alot. The 60 Plymouth also have a long story. I can write about them here soon so people get to know the cars more 🤘🏻 and all the facts will be right 😀 | 2019-12-25 10:14 | ||
AnimatronixX ![]() | @amcarfrue Welcome and thanks for sharing! I listed you as the owner, because "amcarfrue's boyfriend" wasn't possible. We may have more for you in stock - did you check all the other Coronados yet? So this is no Coronado from Belgium, but a 1963 conversion by ANA-Motor of Lund & Nyköping, Sweden. Further reading: Chrysler in Sweden and The DeSoto, Plymouth, and Dodge Coronado. @atom @Lateef please check this (incl. the other Scandinavian ones) and maybe assist. Do you agree with '1961 Plymouth Belvedere Stretched Limousine ANA-Motor'? -- Last edit: 2019-12-23 15:43:32 |

| amcarfrue | The 61 Limousine is my boyfriends now. It was build in Sweden in 1963. There are two 61 Plymouth limouisines here in Norway and my boyfriend have both. In the registation papers is says that the car is extended with garantee from Chrysler Corporation. And its stamped Sweden 1963. The car came to Norway as a white simple Belvedere Sedan and send to sweden for extending and black paint. The owner og the 60 Plymouth limo is also from the same village as we live in, so the two cars in the front are reunited here 😂 | 2019-12-23 14:33 | ||

JMMaza ![]() | The car used for interior shots made at Pinewood Studios definitely was an Alfa Romeo 2600 spider Touring: Note that the passenger's seat was replaced with a flatter wood box in order to show Sean Connery at the correct height in the car. -- Last edit: 2019-09-27 13:49:48 |

dsl ![]() | Apparently it was a Sunbeam Alpine as recognised from the dashboard and steering wheel in the over-the-shoulder shots, and the windscreen frame matches; however the rear view mirror was repositioned for continuity reasons. |

nzmax ![]() | Had a look through my Prince history book, and this would be a 1963 S21-4 series (November 1962-October 1963) Prince Skyline. All previous model Skylines had over-riders on the rear bumper regardless of being Deluxe or Standard trim. Can quite tell if the Skyline pictured is a Standard S21S-4 model or a Deluxe S21D-4 model. | 2015-02-28 07:33

dsl ![]() | Not Japan, it's Hong Kong. No reason to assume this was shipped from Aus - UK supplied lots of stuff to HK direct. Small numbers of 1100s might have made it to J in period - there were a few Minis sent there, particularly Cooper - and there have a lot of imports from UK in last few years of 1100/1300 (especially posher versions - VdP, Wolseley, MG and the handful of surviving Rileys) which have become cult retro cars there. But your basic point is right - I'd get excited about finding one of these in J. | 2014-08-17 01:13
Mark208 ![]() | I was surprised to see this humble but innovative (same designer as mini: Alec Issigonis) BMC saloon on a Japanese street! I knew the two door MG version was exported to the US (with mixed results) but thought that was pretty much it as far as export markets were concerned. Perhaps an Australian-spec import? | 2014-08-17 00:34
