Sunbar ![]() | Originally in the case of my old employer we would make specials for any smaller concern but by the 1990s all the smaller business was transferred to a smaller outfit. It included some specific applications for Jaguar and Land-Rover. It all comes down to volumes, anything less than 50,000 a year becomes very expensive to make when the suppliers are geared-up for the mass-market volumes. An electric motor sold as OE for £7 or £10 bulit on automated equipment would cost over say £30 when only the armature was assembled and wound by machine. |

johnfromstaffs ![]() | You ask why these things are the same price compared with a mass produced grotbox. 1) How many parts are common with a mass produced car or motorcycle? 2) How many parts are special to the type? 3) How big is the total market? 4) How is the dealer network and warranty support organised and paid for? 5) How much more rugged are the engine/transmission/driveline parts considering the arduous duty cycle upon which these these things may be used? 6) Over how many copies is the cost of design, development, tooling and preparation for sale amortised? 7) Is there a special dealer network made necessary by the locations in which these things are sold? In summary, what is the total cost of sales including the ex works figure when on the dealership floor, and what is the expected gross margin? This is just a quick off the top of my head list, there may be other items that are not immediately obvious, like special arrangements for delivery. jfs - twenty plus years’ experience in the automotive industry as a commercial manager for a tier 1 supplier. -- Last edit: 2021-05-28 10:32:53 |

AnimatronixX ![]() | Due to sudden budget cutbacks they couldn't realize their plans of also having the roof, the floor the rims and the drivetrain made from glass... There were even rumours about a transparent hearse driver as well, but that's maybe because I started them. Anyway, back to topic: Coachwork looks to be made by W. D. Hadley. |

CougarTim ![]() | Unless things were different in Australia, the GT350 would be a Shelby, and the details are all wrong for this to be a Shelby. I think the 'GT350' striping is false. | 2020-01-12 22:25 | ||
MisterZ ![]() | Late 2016+ (October+) update, identified by new raised bonnet with bigger bulge. This update added electronic stability control (ESC) and side/curtain airbags, giving it a 5 star ANCAP safety rating. The engine was also updated to meet Euro 5 standards. Note: only the single cab variants gained the safety upgrades, but all variants gained the new bonnet. This update was developed specifically for the Australian market. Another noticeable difference is that the fuel filler is no longer on the body of the vehicle itself. On pre-2016 models, it was located right below the black vent behind the driver's side door seen here. -- Last edit: 2020-04-24 16:18:43 |
