Carmaker1 ![]() | Yes, it was actually as you said for what was called MY 1995. (Thanks BTW) The clear indicators indeed arrived during the 1994 calendar year, then Q4 1995/Q1 1996 was a major facelift to front and rear, followed by June 1998 update as you said. The 1996 update (first facelift) coincided with start of R230 development in 1995. R230 exterior design freeze was in January or February 1998 (final look set on June 19, 1997), when the first prototype-mules went public with testing, showing the final design in disguise. Last R129 facelift was revealed during early public testing of R230 in spring 1998. (New W223 S-Klasse began testing within months of W222 Mk. II launch in 2017) A lot of R129 milestones paralleled decision making on its successor. Besides that, I find it weird how it was renamed in July 1993, then randomly received new indicators in 1994 (MY 1995 in some major markets), then a facelift not long after that. They might has well waited to make add clear indicators at Facelift #1, versus making it a 1 year effort (1994-1995). MB should've just swtiched to clear indicators in mid-1993/MY 1994 upon renaming. (S-Class also got new clear indicators in mid-1994, to echo W124 E-Klasse and upper trim W202s) -- Last edit: 2018-07-08 22:05:02 |

dsl ![]() | Just to confirm UK model dates - 600 SL arrived Oct 92, renamed SL 600 in July 93, slight tweaks in June 98 (Xenon lights, glass panorama hardtop), dropped April 2001. Glass's does not mention clear indicators or revised tail-lights, which I think was 1994 calendar year. | 2018-07-07 16:23
Sandie ![]() | For promotional images, manufacturers/importers tended to favour fake plates. Sometimes they'd use real ones and re-touched real ones (to change the part of the plate that dates the cars so the image doesn't appear out of date). I wonder if back then there was known sequences of fake plates for parties to use, as there are so many sequences that seem to recur. Not even the first LxxxGJD plate on here: /vehicle.php?id=1032454 /vehicle.php?id=782197 Just another reason we shouldn't trust that all plates we see are genuine without some kind of evidence (like knowledge of it being a genuine sequence) as some seem to. |

SunDude ![]() | I'll admit that I haven't seen this particular documentary program, but I can't imagine anyone entrusting the uber-valuable GT40 P/1075 to Jeremy Clarkson (!!!). He makes for interesting TV watching, but he's brutal on the cars he drives. More likely this is a replica of P/1075. |

dsl ![]() | OK - I'm convinced. But the plate is very strange - I've finally found some confirmation that the Lxxx GJD series was actually issued (Central London 01 Aug 93 - 30 June 94) after several blanks across normally productive sources. But none of L344-348 (as plug-ins around L346) show any returns. A few random plug-ins with different numbers come up with all sorts of things and ages, but most still blank. I wonder if it's a ghost series for temporary registrations. | 2014-01-27 14:12
G-MANN ![]() | Maybe that registration didn't show up because this was given a personalised plate. | 2014-01-27 13:53
carmaker1 ![]() | Please change this to 1994 SL600. I've found the original image, which labels it as a 1994 SL600: http://www.performance-car-guide.co.uk/images/L-1994-Mercedes-Benz-SL600-2.jpg -- Last edit: 2014-01-27 13:45:12 |

carmaker1 ![]() | I did too and unfortunately for the weirdest reasons, I found nothing on registration. I found it now and it's a 1994 SL600. This is not a 2000 model in being very much a pre-facelift model, even preceding the 1995 clear signals: Link to "www.vemucars.com" -- Last edit: 2014-01-27 13:46:54 |

dsl ![]() | The plate is an unissued fake and does not show on check sites. I've tried L 345 and 346 with GJC, GJD and GJG with no trace. GJO are both Volvo 240 SE. So plate no help. However this may be a June 2000 SL 500 Limited Edition which came only in "designo Mystic Blue" metallic with blue hood and had SL Edition side badge (there was also same for SL 320). | 2014-01-27 03:47
carmaker1 ![]() | This is not a 1989 model, so why it is labeled as such? The R129 wasn't even launched as a 1989 UK model. This is the V12 SL that was barely launched in 1992(see V12 badge). This is an L-plate vehicle, with the amber front lights. It's a 1994 SL 600. Please change it ASAP. | 2014-01-27 03:05
