It IS a Opel KAD A here, definitely. Every detail fits, no other possibility.

Sunbar wrote A (very) few Opel Admiral/Diplomats were imported into the UK by GM but were definitely not right hand drive. Therefore I think it unlikely they were produced at Russelsheim for Australian use as either Opels or Holdens. Holden would have re-engineered the car as rhd.

Sunbar - that has been my point all along. The Holden HR Sedan was sold as the Holden Special in South Africa. I grew up in one, so I know them quite well. Please compare the picture above with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Holden_HR_Premier_186_1966_01.jpg.

It would be interesting to know what the differences are you see that would make this an Opel KAD (not sold in ZA).

Citsa ZAPolice plate on it. Huge mistake - ZA police never used R9s... 2012-11-04 19:54
Citsa ZA1970's US truck based; my bets would be on a Ford F-100 2012-11-04 19:52
Citsa ZANo - chances are very high that it would be either M-B or MAN; impossible to say which and if. The wording in the middle of the back looks like Mercedes Benz; they are normally marked there and in that way.

Citsa ZAYes and no. Holden-based, but called the Chevrolet Constantia in ZA. 2012-11-04 19:47
Citsa ZAThis is Isuzu KB20 -based, for sure - but the likelihood is very high that this specific one was still branded "Chevrolet LUV" looking at the trim. 2012-11-04 19:44

ingo DE:think: Now, 4 years later, I know more. I've mixed it up with the VW 1200 from 1966+. There was indeed only a badge "1200". Later on the Beetles had badges with "VW ...." - I should have known that, because I've stolen many of those badges on junkyards in the early 90ies, when 1970ies cars still have appeared then  2012-11-04 17:43

tore-40 NO@ingo: Are you sure there were never a combinatioon of 'VW*' with '1300' or '1500'? I think otherwise, my sources say '1*00' in 1966 and 'VW1*00' 1967.

Some random hits on the net:

I agree with DynaMike, 1967 Typ 1 1300 or 1500.

dsl SXWolseley ADO38 - usually 16/60, but local names and versions may differ .....

Update: no trace of a specific ZA version or to confirm if local assembly. There was an Aus-only 6 cylinder version 24/80 "Upmarket counterpart to the Austin Freeway was this Australian Wolseley derivative, using the same 6-cylinder “Blue Streak” engine, producing 80bhp from its 2.4-litres (hence the model name). A mid-1960s revised version was referred to in the brochures simply as the “BMC Wolseley Mark II”, although the 24/80 badge could still be seen on the boot lid." - Link to "www.aronline.co.uk" - but seems to have had a badge on side of front wing, and no info about export to ZA. So UK-built 16/60 in absence of any other info.

Gag Halfrunt UKI think this is a Mercedes-Benz O305 with South African coachwork, from either Johannesburg or Pretoria.

Note the big bumper at the front and the change in window size on the lower deck. And the back of this Pretoria M-B matches almost exactly:
