DAF555 SEI think that maybe Tjorven could be considered as the brand name for the home market, if one can put a brand name to them at all.
These cars were designed by Posten, owned by the state, in cooperation with Kalmar Verkstad, partially owned by the state at that time. Kalmar Verkstad mainly produced railwagons, railcars etc.
The main purpose was to get a good mail delivery vehicle for Posten and to secure work at Kalmar Verkstad, the base of the vehicle was DAF 44. Kalmar Verkstad were swedish agents for DAF during a few years around 1970.

So I believe that naming wasn´t very important in the beginning. Somewhere along the construction they got the nickname Tjorven, taken from one of Astrid Lindgrens characters that was very popular during the sixties as a childrens book and a tv-series "Vi på Saltkråkan".
This name was used officially both in combination with KVD, the abbreviation for Kalmar Verkstad, and more or less like a brand name for the cars when trying to sell them to private persons and companies. I´m afraid I don´t have any sales literature available to see exactly how the used it, but I do have a sign from a DAF and Tjorven service station reading: DAF Tjorven Service. I also have a yearbook for the 1970 models of all cars sold in Sweden where they testdrive the prototype of Tjorven Combi based on the DAF 55 chassis. This however never came into production. It´s also listed amongst the other cars in the yearbook under the name Tjorven.

So it´s not easily decided what´s the most correct way to name these vehicles. KVD is given by the manufacturer to the registration authorities, if they would have wanted to use Kalmar as a name they could have.
Some cars were exported and on foreign markets the name Kalmar was used, according to one of the links above.

Alongside with the Tjorven vehicles there was also a project going on at Kalmar Verkstad for constructing a truck for Svelast, another company owned by the state through the national railroads. Two prototypes were made before the project was closed. The prototypes had the name Kalmar written over the front. http://www.svelastterminal.com/

So my guess is that Kalmar would have become a brand name for both Tjorven and these Trucks if they would have been successful, unfortunately they were not.

Alexander DEHm, I am still a bit puzzled. The links I found, web-pages from Sweden, use 'Kalmar'. Not that I can read Swedish, but I think this is ment as the brand name.

The id-plate:
http://tjorvenweb.freehosting.net/BILDER/kvd%2D24.jpg
says 'Kalmar Verkstad' (as you said).

Is it possible that the registration office uses the abbreviated name of the company and not the brand name?

Sometimes such abbreviations become brand names (e.g. Svenska Aeroplan AB), other times not (e.g. AB Volvo or Volkswagen AG).

Perhaps you can solve this riddle. It is DAF related, anyhow! :)

DAF555 SEThe name Kalmar was used on exported vehicles. On the homemarket they were almost always referred to as Tjorven, in the registry most of them are KVD which means Kalmar Verkstads AB. Sometimes Tjorven is part of the name and sometimes not. I think KVD 440 are the ones delivered to the postal services, and KVD 441 the civil versions. But I´m not absolutely sure of this.

Here are some samples from the registry:
