Gamer  | Canada did get the 1.8, that was the CL. However, what is at hand is far more interesting... It turns out the fill digits 1931 were indeed issued, and googling the first part of the VIN (up to the serial number) yields almost all results from Brazil, with a lesser extent in Argentina and Mexico: https://www.euamoleilao.com.br/lotes/0163-002283-vw-golf-gl?1668358240 So there is an extremely high likelihood this is a Golf from Brazil. BR Golf IIIs were a mixed bag. The first years, probably 1994-95, they imported the GL from Germany (no sidemarkers) and the GLX and GTI from Mexico. I can't find a Canadian brochure, but at least in Mexico, the 1.8 was offered that year: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/1996_golf_mexico/10.jpg Had a look at the episode again, it has no repeater, so it is indeed a Puebla-built model as I assumed. The bumper had no sidemarker, but could be replaced. | Gamer | All right, this VIN has obviously been grossly misinterpreted. Let's try to set it right... 3VW is obviously correct. Next digits can't be four numbers, but two letters. This is a North American spec 4dr Golf III, which means it can be F (GL) J (City) or L (Celebrity Edition). According to avtocod, this has 1781 ccm with 90 hp, therefore the digit should be H (or G if this is a Canadian Golf) 193...I can't say where they got the 19 from, but the 31 is almost certainly a misreading of 8, the filler digits. This is followed by 1H, the chassis code for the III and Jetta/Vento. 9th digit L, again, should not be a letter (except X) but a number. It could be a lowercase L mistaken for a 1, but looking at L on a keyboard, it's possible they wanted to type K, which they mistook for an X. 10th digit T - 1996. 11th digit M - Plant Mexico, Puebla. The rest are serial digits which I am bravely going to assume are correct... |
