RichardPercival US1997 Carrera S or 1996 Targa?? - The badge and 2 panel engine cover/spoiler suggest the S but may have been added after. The roof lacks the rain gutters of a regular coupe and appears to have the smooth rails and hardtop like look of a Targa. Modifying the S bits would seem simpler than the roof! It's a Franken-Porsche :) 2020-11-27 16:05

zodiac wrote I can't remember if it was in "Thoroughbred and Classic cars" or if it was in "Classic and Sportscars" I read an article about 100 things a cargeek sould do before he or she died, and one of those was to have a look at imcdb.org and delve into what other people has written concerning minor differences between car models, but the author warned people to join as it was difficult and most of what was written was perfect. That puts pressure on us, the members, to be as meticulous as can be.

zodiac SE@carking:

To properly identifying a car at imcdb demands not just a "240" or a "Toyota Corolla", because that means very little, but also a year and possibly a few lines to make the identifying trustworthy and not something made up or random.
If you don't believe in that, then please consider that many journalists takes what is written on the Internet for a fact, and not any persons point of view. I can't remember if it was in "Thoroughbread and Classic cars" or if it was in "Classic and Sportscars" I read an article about 100 things a cargeek sould do before he or she died, and one of those was to have a look at imcdb.org and dwelve into what other people has written concerning minor differences between car models, but the author warned people to join as it was difficult and most of what was written was perfect.
That puts preassure on us, the members, to be as meticulous as can be.

As you're identifying many Volvo's you should know that not many, if any, 940 has the VOLVO badge on the front wing and that 940 has a bent sheet metal at the air intake where the windscreen wipers are mounted, and not a strip around the windows as of the pre 1990 740. Because of that the above car is a 740 and not a 940.
After that it gets somewhat more tricky, but one can say that it doesn't have polished aluminium on the the lower strip beneath the side window, but it's black. Hence it's not an entry level GL, but something more upmarket. It can be a GLT or a Turbo but it can also be a GL with GLT trim.
As of 740 it became rather different at the MY 1986 acompared with earlier models, but I leave it up to you to look in to those differences.

Hence this is a 1986-89 Volvo 740, possibly a GLT or a Turbo.
