Schoolboy rhyme:
"Latin is a language as dead as dead can be,
It killed the ancient Romans and now it's killing me".

 for dsl. I had 7 years Latin in school - for what good? For nothing! French would have been the better choice :/ (back in the early 80ies and at our school, there was no possibility to taking Spanish, Russian or even Chinese).

I had several years too and absolutely hated it. But it was the only time I ever found a hated subject which I was also good at. And later it was useful - the grammar discipline helped me write good English (some of the time anyway), it was very useful in learning French and means I can read Spanish and Italian and understand about half of what I've read, even though I've never learned either. So it did me some good, although I have not yet forgiven the torturers who inflicted it on me.

ingo DESure, this is the only advantage, to understand a few Italian or Spanish vocables - but this is not suitable. I haven't studied archeology, medicine or ancient languages, where you need Latin for... 2011-02-04 19:16

The irony is that I am an archaeologist, but have never needed or used Latin in any part of my studies or career.

ingo DEAha - but this was the answer, when I've asked my teacher: "Can anyone tell me, for what we will need this later on in our lives?"

But this question had caused more agressive reactions, when I've positioned in the Mathematics-lessons, when all this off-hooked stuff was presented.

vilero ESEl saber no ocupa lugar =(more or less, I hope)= You can never know too much.

Any way the original phrase, and very famous, it's "Quousque tandem abutere, Catilina, patientia nostra?"

ingo DEI must admit, that nothing much from my 7 years Latin-lessons is left over. The few Latin-phrases, I still know, are well-known by others, too - coming from the Asterix-comics, not from school... 2011-02-04 21:49

Which sort of translates as "Which dipstick crashed into my bike with a 1960s Pontiac - one of our patients?"

I studied history of art and archeology, and never really needed Latin... But sometimes it can be nice and interesting to know or learn things one doesn't need :)
