In that pile I can see a red '61-63 Thunderbird and the white car, judging by the three portholes, possibly a Buick. So back then were parts of New York complete wastlands with junkheaps like these everywhere? Such a waste of good cars. :(

No, it was filmed on location.

Detectives tend to have more upscale cars. For example, LAPD used to issue Mercury Montegos to detectives.
