There were codes starting with 901, but it gets messy without clear or widely-used references. The enforced change in model name from 901 to 911 after Peugeot's objection screwed up the first few years, but 1968+ it became an internal system of [911x] with x being individual letters according to model year as there were changes/updates pretty well every year - so 1968 A-Series, 1969 B-Series etc. But that then gets complicated by a parallel use of single letters for trim levels (sequentially N, S, R, T, L, E) which overlapped in 1972 to create a 911 E E-Series. 1974 G-Series was the big bumper facelift and is sometime referred to as [930] across all models, not just the 1975+ Turbo, although I think 930-as-Turbo-only is more widely used. Continued until 1979 L-Series range, then 1980 onwards became A-Programme, 1981 B-Programme, etc. It would be a nightmare to try to use any of these codes - a huge mountain of uncoded 911s to backfill, not enough visual separation year-on-year for core versions (most visually identifiable jumps are every 2-3 years), and some years there were almost no core changes to justify a new letter (1971, 1975, 1977, 1979, and several 1980s years) with the only significance being that new models may have emerged that year. And ultimately no-one else seems to use the codes, so we wouldn't really be achieving anything useful. |

As for this drawing, 1970+ grille/sidelights and arches, possibly 1973 mirror. Maybe meant to be a Carrera RS. |
