Unusual for an Austin FX3 Taxi, it has a front door in place of the normal open luggage area. It still has the taxi sign on the roof and a taxi-meter in the front by the side window.

It could probably be a provincial taxi for use outside of the London area. It still seems to be registered in London

edit: The hire cars were sold by Austin but Mann & Overton exclusivity sold and registered all London's Austin Taxis. Outside of London the FX3 taxi was also sold directly by Austins themselves.

Provincial were sold in the 1930s so perhaps there was a Provincial Taxi version FX3 also or was it a FL1 Hire car with taxi extras?

I can find no evidence for a Provincial taxi version, so probably best to list it as a FL1 converted to taxi use since there is ten years after original registration and in use in Oxford.

It also shows the trouble of putting a large trunk in the boot (apologies to any US readers) when they normally could put it alongside the driver in a normal FX3 taxi.

Another here with four door body first registered in Manchester.

From the body, taxi sign and grille it suggests its a Provincial taxi sold by Austin and not the 'London Taxi' sourced only through Mann & Overton Ltd. who partly financed the tooling.
