This may be an Austin Sixteen, but it certainly did not share the body of the Ten, which was a much smaller car. The Sixteen was built on the body/chassis introduced in 1939 as the Twelve, with the ancient side valve engine persuaded to part with 40bhp by the use of an alloy cylinder head. The Sixteen, in 1946, got an all new 2.2 litre overhead valve four, producing 68bhp and was a much better proposition. The Twelve continued in production, but sold very poorly compared to the Sixteen. The overhead valve engine, or its stretched to 2.6 litre brother, went on to be used in the A70, A90 Atlantic, Healey 100, Taxi and Austin Gipsy, and last and definitely not least, the K8 Threeway Van and derivatives. Six cylinder versions were to be found in larger commercial chassis, and the Sheerline and Princess, although, as the commercials came out in 1939, they were the root, and the four cylinder the variant. A sturdy and profitable design for Austin. (Thanks Bedford!) -- Last edit: 2016-09-03 12:56:24 |
