Don't quote me too literally on this, but I've seen refs that Merc (and other Germsn brands - BMW, Audi, VW) used ZA as their major/only source of RHD production of mainstream models for anywhere in the world for several years in the 2000s. Then ZA changed tax incentives or something similar so this dropped away for many models. ZA still churned them out but export emphasis reduced.

I posted similar comment a few years ago, but jfs said his Merc estate from this period was German-made, so ZA sourcing might have been volume saloons only.

 11th digit is an F so that is made in Bremen, Germany. I believe, @dsl is accurate, that only Saloons were ZA assembled. I am going to keep researching.
