Quite possible. Before the formation of the NHS in July 1948 and hospitals became under central management, a lot of them were run by local charities and local authorities. It was a known practice for the nobs on the committees to donate their car to the hospital for ambulance use when a new one was bought.

The practice of nobs 'donating' things to charities which were funded by public subscription was well known; of course they only rarely awarded themselves a fair sum of money for the items in question.

It reminded me of parts of the book 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists' which I read recently! :/

Very depressing, everybody feeding off the backs of the group underneath them, until you get to the bottom.........
I don't think Tressell wrote very much else, he probably depressed himself writing that book. I've given up on "improving" literature and now stick with Buchan, Ryder Haggard and Edgar Wallace, much easier on the emotions. Try "The Riddle of the Sands" by Erskine Childers or "Harbour" by Philip MacDonald, writing as Anthony Lawless.

Plus ca change ... etc. It's definitely time that we develop a successor to capitalism.
