I've just notice that early Neue Klasse had wipers parked on left.
And had front panel under bumper with no air inlets like here.
I'm searching for dates...

As is the case with many entirely new cars, apparently http://www.neueklasse.de/ (Klick on "Fahrzeugtypen" then on "1500") there were a few problems also on the Neue Klasse. That is the first few months until a year after introduction plenty of modifications take place. And also early press photos can vary quite a lot from production cars.

Having that said I believe wipers was changed either during pre series production or after less than a year in production.

Also early 1800's had the front panels without the holes, while I've seen several 1800 TI's that had it, so I believe the change took place around 1964 Link to "www.bmw-02-club.de" . 1964 MY saw several changes like a new interior.

Looks like the left parked wipers indicate uber rare vorserie 1500 only.
Sources don't answer the question about air inlets. Searching on realoem.com BMW spare parts page gives me the hypothesis that inlets were the exterior 'sign' of transmission oil cooler (on manual or automat, as well!) integrated with water radiator.

However... We know that there were two types of front panel.
That's the list of Neue Klasse models with 'type 2' front panel, available in 1/1966-1/1972 period.
I think we have golden nugget. :sun:

You may compare type 1 (weight 14 kg) & type 2 (13,3 kg) front panel reference lists. That's it!

So, here we have 1966 1800.

I don't totally agree with that.
The one significant change that happened with the Neue Klasse in 1/1966 Link to "www.bmw-02-club.de" was the introduction of the 2000 series, with bigger horisontal head lights. Some changes have had to taken place to make them fit.

All of the 1800 TI/SA I've seen Link to "otisblank.com" have had the holes in the grill, and they were all made in the first half of 1965. Either they have all been altered, after a crash (which isn't unlikely as they had a hard life on the race track!) or the change took place earlier.

I've a friend who has a 1600 Neue Klasse. At one point I considered buying that one, but ended up buying a Zephyr instead, as I thought it was too much work on the Bema. Instead it was a full load of hidden repair work needed on the Zephyr, while it was more obvious on the BMW. Perhaps the BMW was a better buy after all...
I'll visit my friend to have a look under the bumper to see if there are any holes. That is other than holes made by rust...
(It may take a while (a fortnight?) as I've some other stuff to take care of before I've time.)

Another puzzle: ultra early Neue Klasse hadn't exterior fuel door on right rear fender. The fuel cap was hidden on boot.

I have a some papers at home listing if not all, but plenty of changes that took place between MY 1963 and MY 1964 on the 1500. I'll list some later.

The 1500 wasn't a fully developed car when presented, but that is nothing strange. All new cars have teething problems; some get highlited in public media which may lead to bad reputation, while other manage to stay hidden. The reputation might take years to repair, long after the initial problems have been taken care of.

Some of the changes between MY 1963 and MY 1964 on the BMW 1500 are:

- Different carburattor (Solex 36 PDSI instead of 34 PICB-1)
- Different fuel pump (Solex APG-PE 15059 instead of APG-PV 837)
- Bigger inlet valve (42 mm instead of 39 mm) and slightly differnt timing
- Different gear ratio on the second gear and better gearbox suspension.
- Different front suspension, both damper and spring.
- Slightly tougher rear axle including differnt gear ratio.
- Two silencer instead of one.
- Different distributor

And among the more noticeable changes can be mentioned:

- Dressed instrument facia instead of painted.
- Control lamp for choke introduced.
- Circular horn ring instead of semicircular.
- Front seat with rear pockets.
- Tiltable inside rear view mirror .
- Torsion bar instead of pullable spring opening for the rear boot.

Those changes are listed in a period workshop manual I've found, BMW Sweden official.
