The street driving scene looks like a real New York location. The rest is probably in Los Angeles.

I was watching the episode where Kramer paints the lines on the highway the other day and you can see inside the car briefly. It looks like it has a 90's style steering wheel in it like the 91-96 Impala's had. I can only guess they retrofitted an air-bag in it for some reason?

Some GM cars offered airbags as on option in the mid '70s...they were the first automaker to do it. I'm not sure what the steering wheels looked like, though.

That would have been the 1973-76 Oldsmobile 88-98-Toronado "Air Cushion Restraint" system. Was a VERY RARE option, perhaps 1,000 made total,I've only seen two in person, both were 1975 Ninety Eight 4drs oddly enough??? I've heard that Chevy did make a few Impalas with it for evaluation, but we're talking less than 10???

I looked for this post just to chime in-

In 73 GM made some Impalas for fleet use with the airbag- The cars had an OLDS dashboard and were supposed to be given back after a lease was up or something like that.

So in that episode where Kramer is painting the lines, you can see a 71-73 Olds dash in there, but Chevy doorpanels. This explains the airbag wheel too. The car is indeed an "airbag" Impala.

This car is EXTREMELY rare, and seems to have been in immaculate shape...I wonder where they got it and what happened to it after the show ended???

In fact, there was a fleet of 1000 experimental 1973 Impalas with modified 1973 Oldsmobile dashboards, those I have seen were painted green and were 4 door sedans. These 1973 Impalas were sold to the public in 1975 well after ACRS became a regular production option on some 1974 models. There were about 10,000 GM cars that were equipped with airbags as a regular production option in 1974-75-76. Most full size models from Oldsmobile, Buick and Cadillac could have been ordered with airbags. I have a 1975 Buick Electra with this option. ACRS became available late in 1973 on 1974 models but there were no 1973 models (other than the experimental Chevys) available with this option.

Kramer claimed he lost the wheel early in the series and couldn't drive until he found the wheel, so along with being an experimental car, it's possible he replaced it with a newer wheel. Whether or not the airbag worked is another matter.

In a few of these thumbnails, you can tell the car was resprayed in that light green color, and was originally that other greenish-brown metallic hue that is on the "well-known airbag Impala" linked earlier in the off-site video. The Kramer car has masking tape over the rear marker lenses from when it was repainted apparently, and when the trunklid is open, you can see the original color around where the weatherstripping is.

The other airbag Impala has been for sale recently for an exorbitant amount of money, claiming to possibly be the last one left. Wonder where this car from the show is now?

I'd be surprised if there would be just a few of these left. I have seen two different 1973 Impalas with airbags on eBay and neither did sell for big money! Other GM models with airbags are probably rarer. I know that just 123 1975 Buick Electra Limiteds with airbags were sold (out of 33778 produced, so about 4/1000), but over the years, I have seen quite a few of these for sale. And none sold for a large amount of money.

I know someone who made a photogroup on Flickr showing 1970's GM cars with ACRS. I have sent him a few pictures he posted in his group and I also sent a few more by myself. Link to "www.flickr.com"

In some of these pictures, this car is a 1973 Caprice. Note the inner door panels with the Caprice badge in the center of the woodgrain trim. Impalas didnt have that. Also the final episode of the front of the car on the street, the grille looks like the caprice grille so I wonder if an Impala was used in earlier episodes, and a Caprice later on dressed with the poverty caps to look like a base Impala.

Those are actually correct 1973-74 Impala door panels. The Impalas had a badge in that metal woodgrain trim strip that was the same general shape as the Caprice badge. However, instead of a "fleur de lis" there was a Chevy bowtie.

The Caprice door panels were completely different from these in appearance, using door pull straps, a different lower door panel on some models compared to Impalas, cloth inserts, and other features. However, if you got a 1973-74 Caprice convertible, it came with the Impala door panels because they were all vinyl.

Im from the UK and i am interested in early airbag cars, this is the original colour if you look at byron blochs airbag chevy video on this link vimeo.com/1553230. The institute of highway safety crashed two airbag impalas many years later and one of them is in this video.
The real find would be a 71 mercury monterey, ford produced 1000 with airbags and Hal Holbrook was the first person in the world to crash a car with an airbag,if you google Allstate insurance there are some adverts with the airbag monterey in them. There are some great pictures on flickr of GM cars with airbags.

Also notice how in the final it has full size hug cap, there are other changes though out the show like the tan colored seats that become dark green (like the rest of the interior) first theres no right side mirror then there is then the mirrors change again, the door jambs get better painted...I always assumed it was the same Impala that someone kept improving over the years
