Toyota Model F (the small bus). Too large for Subaru Liberty/E10 etc.

Hmm, At first I thought Nissan Vanette, but Subaru could be, I think an E10 is to small to match...
I still think Nissan Vanette: http://img.2dehands.nl/f/normal/11528165.jpg

The BX is the version where the C-pillar window was imitated by paint... Forgot what year and model.

It is hard to tell from this picture although the specific trim on the C-pillar was mostly used around 1985 - 1988. I think the rearview mirros are type 2 though. And as it has a second rearview mirror it cannot a standard BX '1400'. It also cannot be a 16TRS, 19TRS or 19TRD, because those whould have a mirror in the C-pillar. It also cannot be a 14RE or 16RS, since those had black window surroundings. So my best guess is that this would be a type 2 BX14E or a BX19D.

It's a first géneration BX 16 or 19... the C-pillar has this little tinted plastic window specific to it (the 14 and 15 didn't have it if I remember)
I've had the same BX 16TRS in the mid of the 90's for a while ,when I broke my R21 Nevada in 1994...

I do not think it is a window, but it is striping on this model.... :)

How can you tell it is a series I?

I always find the BX a great car to drive. I still miss my 1988 BX14E and also my TGD Break. The last one has now been scrapped for good, my brother drove it untill recently, but the engine gave up at 440.000 km :(
