They were built from 1937 till 1939 (the coupes till 1941), and after the war between 1948 and 1955 in the Sovjet-zone of Germany, first as BMW, but soon as EMW. The EMW had a logo in red and white, instead of the traditional blue and white one. I think post-war versions had thicker bumpers, so I'd opt for 1937 as its date of birth.
