Starsky and Hutch goes to Vegas with style. A 1959 Edsel Corsair. Engine overheats on the way.

This is a 1958. Not a 59.

Car owned by a Mr. Cantos of Los Angeles, California. He told me they really beat this car during the filming. Notice in one of the shots the door is ajar...this is because the catch was sticking and the crew eventually took a crowbar to it. In one scene in this two-part episode, Hutch can be seen hopping over the driver's door to get out because of the sticky catch. Damage was eventually repaired by the filming company at the owner's insistence. This car can also be seen in an episode of "Eight is Enough", the ABC comedy/drama.

Yet another prop department horror story! :??: Please give my condolences to Mr. Cantos. I have found that there was no convertible offered in the Corsair series of 1958, only Citation and Pacer. This car has Citation trim, including the Edsel "pickle" emblem on the rear quarter panel visible in the second thumbnail image. Citation convertible chassis code is 76B. This is one of only 930 such examples built.

Something to take note of when trying to track 1958 Edsels by the body code: The senior series and junior series used the same body codes for corresponding body styles. So there are two 76B's (Pacer and Citation convertible), two 63B's (Pacer and Citation coupe), two 57B's (Pacer and Citation 4-door hardtop), two 57A's (Ranger and Corsair 4-door hardtop), and two 63A's (Ranger and Corsair coupes). Also, the six and nine-passenger version of each wagon model through all three model years have distinctive body codes, but are frequently hard to distinguish at a distance. If the third seat is down, about the only way to tell the difference is by a split back seat in the nine-passenger versions.

BTW, most happy to keep the record straight on my favorite car. I have screen grabs of Barney Fife's Edsel if there's any interest, plus many other Edsel grabs that aren't here.

I noticed that about the chassis codes over on lovefords.org, and it seems that they were also shared with Ford and Mercury. I'm a sucker for orphan car makes and lost sheep like De Soto! Did you see the Amblewagon in last month's Hemmings? Ok, on topic, is there a way you could more correctly identify another wagon? Sorry to say I made my best guess.

The Edsel was introduced on September 4, 1957 as the first new automobile for 1958. Ford issued a statement that it would distribute coupons to consumers who purchased 1960 models and carryover 1959 models prior to the announcement, valued at $300 to $400 towards the purchase of new Ford products to offset the decreased values. Edsel was sold through a new network of 1,500 dealers. Ford announced the end of the Edsel program on Thursday, November 19, 1959. However, cars continued being produced until late in November, with the final tally at 2,846 1960 models.
