Air cooled version, so 1980/81. |

Apparently no lower grille indeed. Sales of the T3 started in spring 1979 (I read May somewhere, but I don't find the site again), and the air-cooled engine was sold at least until 1983. Wikipedia says mid-1983, but this information is unsourced. From what I understood from several sites and from the brochures, the water-cooled engine was just the optional 1981+ Diesel one until 1982, when 2 gasoline ones were added as option. No more air-cooled engine was available from 1984 onward. So if I'm not mistaken a "single grille" can indicate a 1979-83 model, while a "double grille" can be the one of a 1981+ van. Maybe there is clues to tell a 1981+ Diesel model from a 1982+ gasoline one? And just for the fun or the headache (but detail only found on Wikipedia for know), an air-cooled model with factory air conditioning could apparently also have a lower grille -- Last edit: 2015-09-12 04:51:11 |

The T2 was made until July 1979, and the T3 was probably presented earlier but AFAIK for normal sale August onwards. The first ones had the old chassis number with an 'A' indicating 1980. 1981+ used standard VIN. So, you will find T3/T25s made in 1979, but they are effictively 1980 models. |

@ tore-40: I just write what I read in the VW corporate website. Just follow the 1st link, and feel free to say them that you don't agree with what they say in their own history page -- Last edit: 2015-09-12 19:03:01 |

This small pop-up roof was called Hubdach (de - "Rising roof") or Spitzdach ("peak roof") in German. Whatever the name was in Spanish, it's a clue to identify a Camper, as Spanish fans apparently call it that way too (es). Was that kind of vans sold in Spain with a different official name? |

But this one is, because black, not an original Camper-, especially not Westfalia-roof. It's most probable something aftersales-market-stuff, mounted sometimes within 30 years. The T3 is most probable a Transporter with windows, as there are not any chrome applications visible, not it has two-tone-paintwork, both features, usual for the more posh Bus. |

Indeed the production started 05/1979, my bad, but still a MY1980 by the 'A' in the chassis number. Try this one for reference. Notice the 7-digit 1980 vs the 6-digit VIN series. (I have tested on known chassis numbers and see no reason to doubt it, the cars checked have been on the road roughly a month, maybe two, after production) Please tell me if you should ever find a T3 with a 2n9nnnnnnn chassis number - that would be a MY1979. |

@ ingo: Let's go for a Transporter, then. @ tore-40: As already said, feel free to contact Volkswagen to prevent them that they made a mistake in their website. I may be wrong, but as far as I'm concerned, when a make uses a year on its corporate site I tend to see this information a little bit more official and trustworthy than the one given in unsourced tables in a fan site which also deals with waxing snowboards |

Volkswagen use it as a launch date, sure, but it doesn't say what model year the vehicles were plated as so won't be a mistake as such. You're dealing with two different things here and as been said many, many times IMCDB use model years (where used by manufacturers) rather than launch dates... -- Last edit: 2015-09-16 15:38:53 |

The tables given by tore-40 say indeed "80 model year" for the early models, but without any external/official sources to confirm it. So for me the only sure data we have for now is May 1979, which is usually considered as being out of the 1980 MY. (And the IMCDb doesn't seem to be that strict on MYs, as the French "MYs" aren't respected for 2001+ models ) -- Last edit: 2015-09-16 16:42:24 |

does anyone has checked the colour-tone? A good topic to narrow down the MY. |

@ ingo: Only if sure that the vehicle didn't have a paint job during its 27- to 30-year life (the episode was released in January 2010). |

The paintwork looks good and the tone original (bad done repaintings you often can see even on pics like this one), and it's in Spain, where a repainting for rust-reasons is rarer than here in Middle Europe. So I think, I can trust the originality. |
