I always ut them in as a Granada because the Consul section has loads of the other model of Ford Consul.

It's one of those imcdb idiosyncracies. Consul Mk1 [EOTA] and Mk2 [204E] are fine, and in theory we could make this 72-75 range Mk3. But for many non-UK audiences and particularly Germany - this is more like a Mk1 for them as it was the first Consul they produced. So we leave this generation blank to avoid confusion/mis-entering. Might be a bit arbitrary as a method but it seems to work happily enough. And more manageably than Granadas with all the US ones without Mk numbers, the European ones with Mk numbers, and then Ford Germany renaming theirs Scorpios a generation before Ford UK. But again we sail merrily onwards without apparently causing chaos ...

Is there not some kind of internal chassis code that could be used to bring MK3 Consuls and MK1 Granadas together?

None that I know of as common usage. Glass's lists the saloons with several 3-letter combinations GFx (with x having several different letters for trim/engine variations), GNx for the various estates, and GCx for the coupe (which in UK was only the 3.0 Ghia = GCT). No idea what codes may or may not have been used in D or B assembled cars, which 72-75 at least had different versions from UK range (eg 1.7 engine, 2 door saloons, lots of coupes with early and late body differences). And we'd need to think about how to treat ZA and Aus assembled cars (plus NZ if they made them there) which had some different versions again - eg this Aus coupe. My feeling is leave the issue well alone - too complicated to unravel and unlikely we can find full code info to make it reliable. If anyone really wanted, we could fudge it by giving the Consuls a [Granada] code - a block update might be possible???
