It was even the cheapest car in the GDR - and the only car, you could buy brand new immediately, without waiting after you made the application for it. No joke, the GDR-citizens had to wait for brand new cars between 12 and 20 years!! But not for the "Sapo"

Sold for in Austria for some years under the name "Eliette".

In the early 1990's used one (but in good condition) was cheapest here than a new bicycle.

After 1990 the East Germans have thrown nearly all of them on the junk-yard and have bought Western cars. Noone has paid money for a Sapo (because noone was interested) and the soldiers of the Red Army, who went back to Russia took Lada's, Audi's and Mercedes back home (often stolen ones), so the junk-yard was the only possibility to get rid of a Sapo.

@Weasel: this is not unusal, that some used cars in good conditions are cheaper than a new (normal, not high performance) bicycle. Actually you have that situation in Germany with cars like Fiat Argenta, old Ford Fiesta, Fiat Tempra and Uno, Opel Corsa A, Ford Escort from the 80ies and the first Hyundai's and Daewoo's sold over here.
In the early 90ies the Skoda's with the engine in the back and the whole Simca/Talbot-model range belongs to that cars, too.

That's true, though especially in case of eastern cars it was funny how fast they lost their value.
From live transmissions in TV, I remember - road in GDR full of these abandoned cars in sort of very old Trabants, Skodas etc.

I've send the Estonian ZAZ-commercial to a friend in Estonia (as to be expected: a K 70-owner) and I just got the answer "Oh, I own also a Sapo since a short time. I've bought it very cheap". So when I'll visit him the next time, I will have the chance to make my own Sapohorhets-experiences :)

Such a beautiful car ;) Our family friends had one of these in Estonia in early 90's. I think it was in this same colour. On my last trip to Estonia (in 2006) I didn't see any ZAZ on the roads. I hope at least few have been saved some where.

If you Google (Images) the ZAZ-968 there are some remarkable customised ones, maybe around still ...

I got the answer from my Estonian friend, where and how he got the Sapo (and why). As I've expected it: he found it on a scrap-yard and bought it for a "symbolic" price. Later he tried to make it running again, but it has many defects. He will try it again in the spring.

When you don´t have to stand in line for it for 10 years, it can´t be much. this car has the nicknames "Stalins revenge" and "invalidka", I was told it was a car where you lay under more than you actually drive in it. In the Netherlands they were sold with a Renault motor.
