New rear vent makes this 1972 or later.

You missed the fuel filler

And the front door without footboard ;)
By the way, the switch took place with the 1973 model year: the 1972 van had still the 1st body.

Given the synopsis of the movie (fr), the action is assumed to take place in the south of France. Shall we then call this T2b a Combi, as it was and still is (fr) the most used nickname for T1 and T2 vans in France?
_____

Just for fun, this one would have been harder to identify: 1968-72 front with a 1973-79 rear part :)

@eLMeR: Your choice of reference brochure uses old stock footage - note the wheel caps. 1972 was a 'crossdresser' as it had the old front end look, with the new rear end. Also the only year with flared front wheel arches (on an old looking front end).

My point was the 1974+ fuel filler w/o flap.

Your other link matches a 1974+, apart from the front wheel arches and the upper front panel. But, it could also be the other way round, take a look at the ad on the side... ;)

Thanks for these details about the 1972 "T2a/b" model: they explain some "oddities" seen on some vans "met" in the IMCDb. But from what I understood, the change from T2a to T2b took place "officially" with the 1973 model year. Or at least it is acknowledged that way by the T2 enthusiasts I know and in all references I found in the Internet: the "hybrid" 1972 models, when mentioned, are apparently integrated in the T2a versions.

But you're right, when talking about model year only, and if I'm not mistaken:
• 1968-71: blinkers in the lower part of the front face, footboard, flat wheel arches, "almost full rim diameter" wheel caps, fuel filler flap, "crescent moon" rear vents, rounded small taillights and rounded molding around the plate;
• 1972: same front end and fuel flap, but flared front wheel arches, smaller wheel caps on slotted rims, square rear vents, square big tail light and straight molding above the plate;
• 1973: blinkers moved under the windshield, no more footboard, still the fuel flap and same rear part as the 1972 model;
• 1974: last change, the fuel filler flap is replaced by a round cap.
Did I forgot something?

About the brochure linked, I don't see any problem to use a 1972 MY brochure (and I trust Samba.com to propose the accurate brochure) with "old stock footage", as it's more likely the way the T2a was looking like in July 1971, when the brochure was made. Changes that took place during the following year can of course not be present in it...

(About the Wikimedia Commons link: I never search accuracy in Low Boy vehicles ;) )

Agree mostly with your listing. In addition, 1968 had door locks with inside door knobs, then integrated in door handle. The interior mirror was slighty different on 1968, 1969 and then 1970 and up. New wheels were introduced for 1971 http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/1971_bus_commercial_french/2.jpg Lastly, the sliding door handle changed for 1974 http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/aug73westy/cover.jpg as well as the smaller circular VW crest in front.

Samba has some issues with model vs. calendar year but in this case the 1971 brochure is indentical, I guess there was a 1970 as well. And you can ask @ingo about VW and pictures in brochures.....

Black wipers since 1973.
Different side rear door handle since 1974. Compare yourself '73 & '74.
Head restraints for 1977 MY (probably not for all versions).
Color-keyed bumpers for 1979 (on two-colored cars), absent in 1978.

... And new bumpers for the 1973 model year.

Can we know call this page the T2 modifications reference, or do anyone have some more small changes to mention? :)
