I found on the internet the list of the German plates used at the moment. Confronting them with a 1973 book I recently bough it is interestin to note how mnay classic german plates are no more in use.
When I was 18 I really falled in love for a Bavarian girl whose father drove a bright red BMW 518 (E12) with the old plate from Füssen (FÜS) now superseded by OAL.

The Wiki-List is comprehensive: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_Kfz-Kennzeichen_in_Deutschland The very most of the expired county- and town-codes are available again since the last 2, 3 years. Based on the activities of just one single guy, a professor, which pushed the local people in a plenty of counties to remind their local and regional awareness.
Something, which doesn't bother me. I stay focussed on the old, original plates.
