What means 'Sterling'?

Probably just the name of the dealership the car came from. Sometimes car dealers put their own badges on the backs of cars, though I think it usually looks tacky and I wouldn't want it on a car I was buying.

Sterling Honda is a Honda dealership - certainly in Ontario, Canada.

My dad once had one of these, it was white and had a snubbed spoiler on the boot. The badge under the tail lights on the right side said 2.0i 4WALB 16v (or something). A lot of Accords of that generation that I've seen in Britain usually have badge saying EX-something.

I thought Sterling was a make in the US that made clones of Rovers.
Honda -> Rover is not so far...

Sterling (a joint venture between Rover and Honda) did make cars for the US in the '80s, but they only made one car. It wasn't a clone of a Rover IIRC, but a rebadged Acura Legend.

It was the Rover 800, which was jointly developed with Honda and was the counterpart of the Legend.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rover_800
Citation The Rover 800 was intended as a replacement for the aging Rover SD1. The car was developed in collaboration with Honda in the early 1980s under the XX codename; the corresponding Honda version was known as the Honda Legend, and was codenamed as HX. Both were produced in the former Morris plant in Cowley, Oxfordshire.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterling_%28car%29
Citation The only Sterling model that was sold was the 800 series, which was a rebadged Rover 800-series but with different specifications developed exclusively for the American market. At first, the saloon body-styled 825 (trims L or SL) saloon was being sold. In 1988, the hatchback replaced the saloon and was called the 827 (trims SL or SLi)

In the US it was Dx, LX, LX-I and eventually SE-I,which had leather seats.
