This is a 1980 (only) Volvo 245 GLE. It was at one time my dream car as I saw one regularly, and the owner took great care of it. It always shone and I never saw it dirty... |

Newer black mirrors. 1979 still had the detached chrome mirrors. |

Almost right: -1979 had black and round door mirors (earlier models had the chromed, or s/s ones), plus the old "crowned" front wing model ornament saying "245 GLE" or whatever model http://www1.garaget.org/archive/82/81350/173032/large_173032-1792595.jpg (although with newer wheels) . -1980 had rectangular door mirrors and only "VOLVO" written on the the front wings http://www.volvo200.org/modellen/asp_pv7557_80_1.jpg . |

Sure about the mirrors zodiac? I think it looks like the fatter mirrors with pointy ends used on 260 from 1978:![[Image: 78260.jpg]](http://pics.imcdb.org/1987/78260.jpg) There is two different cars here. The one in the main image, thumb number 1, 2 and 5 has the 1981+ tail ligths but indeed the 1980 front end and rear bumper. Something must have been changed? Thumb number 3 and 4 looks like 1984-1985 GLE. |

Yes, I am. At the time they were new I was aged nine, and followed my parents when they bought a 1978 (silver) Volvo 245 DL. To please me (and possibly make me calm down a bit) I got some brouchures which I still have got. My parents were satisfied with the Volvo and kept it for a number of years, and I had time to compare it with similar ones owned by friends and neighbours. In fact it was that reliable (after Volvo changed the automatic gear box on the guarantee...) they kept it past the time I took my driving licence, nine years later, by which time I had a friend who had a (blue) 1979 244 DL and an other friend who had a (dark red) 1980 245 GL. The latter friend I helped with exchange the control valve for the heater and the fan engine (it took me a day to do it). MY 1980+ 240 probably got the similar looking 1978+ 260 door mirrors to make it look more posh, and also probably because of it was easier to change the viewing angle from inside compare with from outside on the earlier models, but I believe they were electrically operated on the 260. -- Last edit: 2015-03-02 14:21:09 |

Just to be clear, I didn't question what you said about the 1979 vs. 1980 mirrors. I just said I thought it looked like the main car had the 260 mirrors. Since the main car has the 1981+ tail lights I started to think a lot of things have been changed on the main car. The fenders, head lights, grille and bumpers can be changed by loosing a couple of screws but the tail lights needs to be welded in. What do you think have been changed? Changing the fan in just a day is pretty good, I have two 240 and the fan is broken on both of them. I haven't gathered the strength to start working with that yet as I know how much work it is... Car inspection stuff has been the first priority. |

Apart from new lights front and rear on the 1981+ model, also the bumpers and front wings got changed. I think the bumpers were changed because of criticism from journalists and others believing the appearance from 1974 until 1980 looked like a long under lip. Plainly looking too safe rather than sporty or youth like (which is every manufacturers wet dream!). I believe the above car looks very much like a 1980 MY, apart from the rear lights, making me believe it has had the rear lights changed rather than the rest, which also is complicated and expensive when considering colour matching. Is there any interior picture showing the facia? The 1981+ MY got a slightly wider instrument cluster roof. @atom: How do you get a picture into the text.
