Lots of 404s in entry list - several included in film #54 WGC Nelson/Miss M (Marina) Nelson - retired. Father/daughter pairing?? #50 Bert Shankland/Ken Kassum, finished 6th - Shankland won in 66 and 67 in 404s #57 Mohammed Iqbal (or Ighal - I've found both spellings - not sure if genuine or typos)/M Lawrence, finished 11th #49 Nick Nowicki/Paddy Cliff, finished 12th (but winners in 63 and 68, both of which are regarded as toughest EAS years with only 7 finishers each time) #43 Jamal Din/CD Barnes, finished 17th |

Could this be Kenya-built? |

I've no info on whether anyone built cars in Kenya in 60s. If anyone did, my guess is that UK (eg Ford, BMC, Land-Rover) along with Peugeot are good candidates. The closest info I can find is that in 1967 Peugeot assembled unspecified models in ZA and Nigeria. |

We already have some Peugeot 404 sedans built in Kenya: /vehicle_419118-Peugeot-404-1960.html /vehicle_780981-Peugeot-404-1960.html Wikipedia lists Kenya as one of the countries the 404 was built in in the page's introduction sentence: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peugeot_404 |

My investigations so far: - the world's last 404 was apparently built in Kenya in 1991, - none of my (incomplete) run of World Car Catalogues (67-84) list any Peugeot assembly in Kenya (but do list 404s in ZA and Nigeria), - this google books extract from 1984 Kenya Parliament Hansard is confusing - but one speaker asks why 404s are being imported, and the Minister says that Kenya has 3 vehicle assembly plants - Associated Vehicles Assemblers (Mombasa), General Motors Ltd (Nairobi) and Leyland Ltd (Thika). However, compare with eg Australia where lots of odd assembly arrangements took place (eg the Renault factory assembled 504s on contract) so the factory names in Kenya may not be much use for this question. But I read the whole parliamentary discussion as generally saying Kenya wants to assemble 404s soon, but is not yet doing so. - also noted that wiki gives no Kenya start date - - just "until 1991" So my best guess on available evidence is Kenya started mid-late 80s, maybe when somewhere else stopped and shipped on all the tooling etc. But this is not a very solid conclusion, so open to better info. In meantime, we could easily label these 60s examples as made in Kenya to attract attention - a better chance of someone who knows tripping over them than if left unmarked in the general lake of 404s??? |
