Please compare 1978 http://www.volvo200.org/modellen/model78.htm with 1979 http://www.volvo200.org/modellen/model79.htm It's rather interesting how manufacturers introduce suffixes where it after a while goes inflationed. Opel introduced the L for Luxus, which was followed by BMW in the late 60's. Volvo had to keep up and introduced in 1971 the 'de luxe', originally introduced by Ford in the 50's. Later 'Grand lux' followed, originally intended as a to-of-the-line model. When the L (for Lux) disappeared in 1979, everything else moved up a step, and in 1992 the DL disappeared as well.
