But...1968 S-type aren't renamed as Jaguar 340???

 As is often the case in British movies of the 70's (and indeed episodes of the Sweeney), cars are often re-registered to look younger than they are. The S type was officially built up to 1968, but I've never seen a G plate car, apart from in the Richard Burton movie Villain and that one was dodgy too. Look closely at the car and these plates don't appear to fit properly and the letter sequence of DDD is also very unusual.

At the time this movie was made, S types were dirt cheap, easily available and probably the fastest set of wheels you could buy for £200, which is why they end up trashed in so many movies of the period. The 420 was launched in 1967 and in line with Jaguar production policy, the old model was still officially available, but usually production was wound down to make way for the replacement model and I bet you'd struggle to find a genuine S type that was registered after August '67. In summary, the car was highly likely to have been fitted with false plates.

Perhaps the false plates have been put on top of the real ones. A couple of years ago, the producers of Ulitmate Force filmed a scene near where I live and I saw a car they used for filming. It quite clearly had false number plates stuck on top of the real ones with double-sided tape or something.
