The reason why is the paint. If original it wasn't common at all. According to this page Link to "www.peachparts.com" some 0,6 per cent choose this colour, 519 hellrot (Ger: bright red) by Glasurit, as optional extra (Ger: sonder). Common colours at the time were black, white, grey, greyish white, greyish blue and greyish green, i.e. dull colours. In fact that dull an investigation I read in an Auto Motor und Sport magazine from around 1967 meant that it was almost dangerous. As a result, but also because of new technics, the 70's came as a revolt with bright orange, green and blue colours. My first guess wouldn't have been a 250 W108, although several things says so like the grill with many strips and the highly sought after swan neck rear view mirrors.
