Daimler Vanden Plas came as Double Six (S1) from Sept 72 and continued into S2 Oct 73. Sovereign VDP started as S2 from May 75. All had tints and vinyl roof as here.

Episode is on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0zVuP6aUr0 It appears at the beginning, it's a Series II, plate is MVM2 (which is now on a Toyota Aygo) and there's no badge on the other side of the rear numberplate.

Who entered Double Six? How do you know?

Me. Best guess - longer production. Stops it being unknown - or even worse falling into the zombie world of ending up just as Daimler where daylight never reaches.

In the episode, someone says it's got 285bhp. If that's true (and not just a line in the script) then that would make it the big V12.

Update - production figures as far as I can tell - there used to be an excellent Jag/Daimler XJ website with loads of pages and precise info, but seems to have disappeared. So from mixed sources:
- S1 Double Six VdP - 351 cars,
- S2 Double Six VdP - 1711 cars,
- S2 Sovereign VdP - 883 cars.

And for reference full Daimler S1 production was apparently
- Sovereign 2.8 - 3233
- Sovereign 4.2 swb - 11522
- Sovereign 4.2 lwb - 754
- Double Six swb - 534
- Double Six Vanden Plas - 351
- Sovereign Coupe - 1677
- Double Six Coupe - 407
[There was no plain vanilla D6 lwb in S1 series; all VdP were lwb only. I can't find similar list for S2 and do not understand why the coupes were included in this S1 list, but there you go].

If you know website details you can use wayback machine to track obsolete websites/pages

I don't think Wayback Machine would work with a big database site.

Has a D badge on top of the grille (watch the youtube video), so Sovereign not Double Six (which would have V12 in gold lettering)

Now I've seen the clip - agree Sov VdP - no badge on right of rear plate and no tints - D6 VdP had tints

Did tinted windows used to be an exclusive luxury feature? Don't all cars now have windows that are tinted to some degree? (yes, I know technology has moved on)

Yes tints used to be specific status thing. In 60s very limited production supply - Triplex Sundym - used on eg Jensens, Astons, RR. Spread downwards in 70s/80s when other makers started to use tints (along with alloys, vinyl roof, fogs, metallics etc) very specifically to separate trim heirarchies - eg L => GL => GLS or L => HL => HLS etc, so can be pinned down fairly precisely in many cases (eg XL no tints, GXL yes tints etc). By late 80s, everyone started putting tints onto things (posh edition Ladas, Protons, whatever) so they lost their status and greater production meant cheaper costs - just like alloys, CD players or air con now.
