Strange - someone's made our little batch of French Austin 850s into Austin Mini 850s. Any particular reason? I'm not too fussed, just curious.

It's uncorrect.
Mini appears for model 1963, not before... All early ADO15 Austins are named Seven from 1960 till 1962 YM. The Morris are named Mini Minor.

So when was the Austin 850 badging used - eg /vehicle_428859-Austin-Mini-850-ADO15-1963.html , /vehicle_241555-Austin-Mini-850-ADO15-1966.html , /vehicle_92068-Austin-Mini-850-ADO15-1963.html ?? And what was the official name for these cars (which were as far as I know only badged 850 for France)??

My guess is that it's more likely that Austin Seven name would have been meaningless in France, so early cars used 850; later on Mini had become famous car and word so more natural to start calling them Mini in France as well. But I have no information to confirm this.
