1963 Mercury. Probably called Commuter, but I'm having difficulty confirming that name was used in '63. |

My NADA Guide lists Colony Park as the only full-sized wagon name for '63. |

Yes, Commander 57 is right: maybe a Canadian only version ? It could be a Canadian only Mercury 114 Commuter if I remember well. -- Last edit: 2014-03-28 22:13:44 |

This is a US Air Force official vehicle on a base in the UK, so a Canadian model would be strange. |

The only model unique to Canada in 1963 was called the Mercury 400, and it didn't have the rear fender ornaments. This is an unusual specimen. I found this picture of a close sibling in London: http://www.flickr.com/photos/38949371@N04/3709796562/ The photographer calls it a Monterey wagon. Might it have been some special model for fleet or military buyers? |

I love seeing these unusual discussions and how they progress - once again imcdb pushing back the frontiers of knowledge. I can't add anything to this one, but whatever was going on was probably not a sprinkling of occasional oddities - the number of US bases in the UK and elsewhere in Europe suggests a supply chain with some volume of traffic. |

The Cars of Lincoln-Mercury by George H. Dammann & James K. Wagner mentions that a number of plain sided Mercury wagons were special made as ambulances for the U.S. Air Force. No information on how many or why. Although these were made in St. Louis and suspiciously one of the Senators from Missouri at the time was on the Senate Armed Forces Committee, and a former Secretary of the Air Force. |

This car is used as an ambulance as the two guys put a stretcher in the back, here's me thinking this was just be an easy identifiable bog standard American fleet type car. |

Mercury Monterey?? http://www.flickr.com/photos/38949371@N04/3709796562/ EDIT oops didn't see CougarTim already made note of this link. but even if this was a Colony Park, shouldnt it be listed as Monterey Colony Park (as it is badged?)?? http://www.history-of-cars.com/php/mercury/1963-colony-park-station-wagon.php -- Last edit: 2014-03-29 10:31:44 |

1963 Mercury wagons are kind of odd. They had Commuter in 1962 and 1964, but not in 1963 it appears. It also appears 1963 was the only year that wagons carried Monterey badges. If we were to list them as they were badged, Monterey Colony Park would only apply to 1963 (I am not necessarily opposed to this idea). Perhaps we would call this one Monterey Ambulance? I was wondering why they would use Mercury instead of just a Ford, but somename has shed some light on that subject. Thank you, Mr. Symington: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuart_Symington |

Cougar's idea is good. For what it's worth, the NADA lists the Colony Parks in a separate series but if they carry Monterey badges, then they should be so listed. Unfortunately, there is no on-line brochure currently which covers the full-sized Mercury line. Changing the listing pending dissent. |

I'm opposed to giving a single year a distinctive model name; mostly in the interests of cataloging; it does not make a lot of sense for there to be an island of Monterey Colony Parks in a sea of Colony Parks. Only 13,976 full size Mercury wagons were made in 1963; 8 currently listed on the site. It seems wrong to have a handful of examples set apart, especially for those searching the site only to think there are none listed. Also I believe it was part of the Monterey Custom line. |

IMO the cars should be listed as badged, even if that is only for one year. There are other examples of this on the site as well. |

Two schools of thought - each with good points. Either way is fine with me. |
