Wartburgs were imported in USA until 1966(the other few East-Europe brands imported into '60s in USA were Skodas)

I still have some doubts. Look the Wartburg catalog

I, too, have some doubts. Details that look wrong are the bumper overriders and the top corner of the windscreen, which is round on the Wartburg, rather angular here.

The alternatvies I can think of, Alfa Romeo Guilia SS or Pegaso Z-102B Touring Coupé, unluckily don't match any better.

Wartburg was first imported into the US in 1957-58- there were few takers to begin with; after the building of the Berlin Wall, there wasn't even that. Truly a rare car if that's what it is!

Here's the most thorough article I could find;

Don't think so. This is one of sixcyl's old crop & zoom pics. I've got the DVD, I could make better captures another day.

I was almost ready to declare this a late-1940's Studebaker.

I'm not.
Hood indentation does not match any late 1940's Studebaker pattern I know and bumper guards are too widely spaced.

Not sure how long a 300SL would last in a neighborhood like this. :D
