 I might be mistaken, but I believe I read 280 SE on the boot lid in the third thumb.
I don't think I've ever seen a 250 w108 with bling wheel arches and very few with these alloys. Also the 250 S (and not the SE) had originally a single exhaust pipe.
Also very few 250 W108 were made as 1968 MY, and very few had any head rests.

Is it possible the registration check can be mistaken? This is very likely a 280 SE.
