Park Ward coachwork. It is difficult to confirm a date from this view but I think it may be a fairly late model because of the suicide back doors. If so it's a 4 1/4 litre.

The numberplate if "MG" is no help, it ran from 1930 to 1949.

MG 1-8000 reported as issued irregularly through MG Car Club; I think we had a Lagonda with one of these plates some months back and wondered if an MG director's car or other related explanation. So Bentley MG 5460 might have had a connection with MG Ltd. (MG 8001 - 9999 were issued to Government Departments).

MG is not referred to by Mr Newall as having any special links with the firm, whereas he does refer to MM as being allocated to Stewart and Ardern, the Morris dealers, in its entirety. I have no knowledge of any MG director driving a Bentley, but you are right that a fair number of 30s MGs had the plates. This car does not figure in the present Bentley Drivers Club members list, but MG registrations both before the number and after it appear, and are both on 3 1/2 litre cars, so my original thought was probably wrong.

A further look in the lists has found a 4 1/4 litre with another MG XXXX number close to what I think this car has, so still no answer. I have all the Bentley Drivers Club membership lists back to 1982.

MG 8001 to 9999 were issued to the War Department.

Glass's has no reference to Stewart & Arden for MM. So score update: Glass's 1 Mr Newall 1. Extra time and penalties look likely ....

I think not, Mr Newall has a 330 word paragraph on the subject of Middlesex registrations allocated to car dealers and manufacturers in blocks, mentioning, inter alia, Vauxhall Motors, and University Motors, the MG dealer, and specifically debunking any impression that MG numbers outside the War Office ones, were reserved for MGs.

The depth and intensity of his research is amazing.

... and MG 5460 is now on a 2002 Honda CBR1100X-2 bike. Any NG numbers on BDC lists? (54xx was 1933 issue)

Not one, nor any HG. The 3 1/2 litre was not introduced to the public until August 1933 at Ascot, you'd have thought that Derby cars would have been introduced at Epsom, but still.., so it's unlikely that many left the coachbuilders before spring 1934. All pre-war Bentley were supplied as chassis only. The first two cars were registered ALU 321 and 323. Mr Billy Cotton, the band-leader and notable Brooklands racing driver was an early purchaser, and his Park Ward 3 1/2 BUV 932 was delivered in January 1935.
