Looks like 'Automatic' script at the boot |

For sure (door mirrors, hubcaps) a 1968 - 72 [W108], and as such (mainly) there were only two versions that didn't have additional numbers (if not removed) on the right hand side of the bootlid. They were: 1968 - 72 280 S [W108 V 28] and 1968 - 72 280 SE [W108 E 28]. There were also being built a few 250's in 1968, but nothing compare with the production numbers of the 280's. It seams very likely it reads 'Automatic' at the boot. -- Last edit: 2013-12-26 09:01:42 |

It cannot be anything else that "automatic". There was never a Diesel-version of the W108/109. The other three badges on the right side were much shorter: 3.5, 4.5 (only for USA) and 6.3 (6.3 = ) Maybe the exact MY can be narrowed down by the colour. For me this blue-gray looks late 60ies-ish. The very last W108/109 had the ugly "safety steering wheel" of the R/C107 (which all later Benzes got, too) P.S.For what is the socket right of the plate? LPG? -- Last edit: 2013-12-26 09:28:05 |

I almost agree with you. Almost, as I've seen a few accessory badges that reads 'TURBO' or just anything, and I believe a few tuning companies also had similar badges? |

But not orignally for those old Benzes and not in exactly this original Mercedes-style. Those badges came up un the 70ies and were at least all from plastic. Even the legendary http://iedei.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/1971_mercedes-benz_300_sel_6-3_amg.jpg (actually the only Mercedes, which was tuned back in the 60ies) hadn't such. |

When looking closely on this picture I can only see one exhaust pipe. Do my eyes betry me or would it be possible to narrow down it to carburettor version, i.e. a 280 S? |

@ingo: It's the trailer connector |

@ingo: I believe we can find the colour here http://users.atw.hu/mb-w108/gyartasadat/szinek.html , perhaps DB 903. Additional data here Link to "www.peachparts.com" (in German). -- Last edit: 2013-12-26 10:25:48 |

The Automatic badge suggests 250 S or 280 S only? |

Unfortunately no Link to "commons.wikimedia.org" and no http://www.autoviva.com/mercedes_benz_280_se_automatic/photo-make/34134 . |

Oops, I thought "Hmm, looks somehow common..", but I didn't got it. But you must admit, that that doesn't look good, this plastic-socket placed at that prominent place. |
