No, the round rear lights indicate that this is a Phase III Vanguard prior to the Vignale facelift, which also included deeper front and rear windscreens. The chrome strip and two-tone design indicate further that it may be one of the rare (901 only built in 1956/7) Vanguard Sportsman models. The engine was tuned as per the Triumph TR of the time, giving 90bhp instead of 68. A view of the front, with a radiator grille rather like a Farina Magnette, and a bonnet ornament, could confirm this, as may the word on the front wing which could be Sportsman.

Having learned to drive, and taken my driving test in my Father's 68bhp Vanguard Vignale estate, I think that 90bhp through 5.50 x 16 crossplies would be a bit of a handful!

I don't know how much Aus assembly of Standards took place, but there was something because of the Ute; whether they also did saloons is another question, but as 2 others with late 50s dates in this series show trim differences from UK I think it's a strong possibility to investigate. And I doubt if they would just do a Ute on its own - not really economic unless part of a bigger effort??

I can't imagine that they would have taken kits for such a low volume product abroad, and the Sportsman was definitely a British variant. Also, the Phase III was a unitary construction, and the modification of the monocoque to produce the Ute would have been costly, so maybe the Ute was a Phase II chassis with Phase III sheet metal knife and forked onto the front end. As an ex motor industry worker, stranger things have happened.

^ No reference to Sportsman as Aus assembly, nor a pictured Phase III model with this side trim/colour split, so default as UK made import, though are the rear lights made-for-Aus??

The rear lights are Phase III, the Vignale had vertical stacked lenses in one assembly, both on the estate and the saloon. The car shown here matches the pictures I have seen of a Vanguard Sportsman in both light shapes and colour splits. The odd one appears to be the Australian built car with a different side stripe and the rear lamp shape similar to an earlier phase III but deeper windscreens, as shown elsewhere.

More Sportsman info here - http://www.the-vanguard-ph3-owners-club.co.uk/page7.html . "In August 1956 the Sportsman version of the Phase 3 became available, identifiable by its almost MG-type grille, bonnet motif and wrap round bumpers, and basically a detuned TR3 engine producing 90 BHP. Overdrive was standard on a 3-speed gearbox although a 4-speed became optional later. It was not a great selling success and was officially dropped from lists around March 1958. No Estate version was ever officially listed. However the story does not end there… Standard still produced Sportsmans to special order for the home and export markets until 1960. Intriguingly, Standard also built Sportsman Estates from the outset, to special order, until 1960. Total number of Sportsmans built is approximately 962, which includes both Saloons and Estates. The total figure for Estates is unknown but between 1959 and 1960 Standard produced 28."

So there's a target to find - a Sportsman Estate.

Definitely a Sportsman, as I know the car. A very late one with (I think) engine number 800.
A very well restored Melbourne-based car that was actually for sale in early 2015.
Original colour scheme as supplied ex UK.

It isn't relevant to this particular car, as it has been definitely identified as a Sportsman but, following on from an earlier mention of the tail lights, I would add that the round lights were still in use for Australian built Vanguards when the Vignale facelift was introduced. A local road test of the model, in February 1959 (Wheels magazine) said that "unfortunately the Vignale "backside-lift" hasn't come to Australia. Our Vanguard still has those barrel-shaped tail-lights - always remind me of those places that were out of bounds to all ranks during the war".
